Unhappy BB Browser without BIS

Please Login to Remove!

Dear all,

Probably this aint the first topic about this issue, but let me just say I've tried searching whole big world wide web and ended up typing this

The problem: I'm using an 8310 on non BB-friendly carrier in Europe. I've downloaded Opera and it works fine, but i need BB Browser to download apps. Specially Google Sync app so I could check my emails in native app. Not online.

As far as I understand I need a Service Book with info on my Carrier. I understand it should be possible to manually enter data settings. Am I wrong?

If we could figure out the solution to this problem, I bet it would be useful to many other BB users.

Many thanks in advance!

To use the BB browser and download apps, you need a Blackberry data plan.

Read these two FAQ links to help understand why.

Unfortunately the only way to download and install apps is 1) having a wifi enabled BlackBerry or 2) downloading a desktop version of the app (not all apps have this option). Otherwise you're out of luck, sorry.

I understand why I need a BB plan. But I've found some info about modifying Service Books so BB browser could use regular GPRS/EDGE connection. I found a thread on this forum with instructions how to, but the link with more info is dead. I cannot share this link with you all cause my message count in this forum is low

If there's really no chance of fixing this, is there some kind of page I could find Desktop versions of Gmail and Facebook apps?

Thanks a lot for your threads!

I really doubt anyone on here is gonna help you "steal" service from RIM even if it is possible. If you want do download apps via the BB browser pay for a data plan.

Unfortunately, I don't think Gmail or Facebook have .alx versions (meant to be downloaded to computer) of their apps.

The thing you mentioned about modifying service books can be a bit risky. Even if you were successful, you might end up getting charged for your data usage, which can be quite expensive.

First of all I'm not doing anything illegal. The phone was bought second hand from previous owner and unlocked with a code given by AT&T. Have to say its a pity I left the box with the code in USA...

I've fixed one issue - Blackberry Browser is now working via TCP/IP protocol. You can find a very poor tutorial in this forum. In hour or so I was able to figure this one out. Downloaded Google Maps, Google Sync OTA and it works fine.

Now I'm thinking why Facebook app isn't working. Says something about connection not being available. As far as i can tel its trying to connect via BB servers or something. If I could direct this app to connect via TCP/IP it would be the end of my puzzle

Once again thanks for your threads.

Facebook app will not work without BIS.
Its a RIM written application, and they require a blackberry data plan for it to work.

Wrong. The NEWEST version of facebook requires BIS. Version 1.6.0.21 works just fine without it.
It's out there somewhere if you look for it, even though you can't get it from RIM anymore.

We generally try to give information on the latest versions of available applications. SO MidnightDraven's answer is valid for people who download the APP now.
