Again, I don't see this problem on my Bold, and I am in EDGE coverage (or worse) all day every day, except those rare occasions that I run errands in the next county (which has 3G coverage). I am also running WiFi all day every day and bluetooth all day every day. I don't see problems with battery life. If the battery life would be better not having the Bold search for 3G, then great. But as it stands, I find battery life on my device excellent.

What I am finding is it has handoff issues when 3G gets weak so if I am in the car and just want to talk why not EDGE. Works great for me. I just want to set that.

So does AT&T force you into 2G&3G mode or 3G only mode? I understand from the posts above that it won't let you use 2G only mode. I live in Manhattan and according to other people's reports, leaving the phone in 3G only mode here yields amazing results. Whereas 2G&3G is not nearly as good. If it was 3G only mode I would be OK w/ it but 2G&3G seems less desirable.

But that's for people living in an area w/ good 3G coverage.

Mine looks for both and its the areas where 3G is weak that I seem to have more issues. You get no choices on ATT.

that's annoying. especially since I literally just read this post from a guy who did a detailed comparison of performance between 2G/3G vs 3G only and concluded 3G only gave him more battery life, much speedier performance, no dropped calls, etc. And this was in Manhattan where I will be using it.

After looking at other threads and stuff trying to figure out how ATT could lock it out, I'm wondering if it has to do with the vendor.xml file. Because its not just the OS doing it, and its not the sim cards since rogers bolds on ATT work fine running ATT's OS. I don't think it can be service books either because all the unlocked bolds should have the same service books I believe. So my best guess is its the vendor file, so maybe if the OS was reloaded onto the device with the file deleted it would give that option. Make sense to anyone else?

I'm thinking it's tied to the Vendor ID. The OS sees the Vendor ID and locks certain features. If true, there wouldn't be any way to get around this, as far as I know.

If that true then loading the Rogers OS on the ATT should give the option but it does not to my understanding.

If the os can see the vendor I'd and the os is not for that carrier then it would not load onto it. That's why the vendor file is deleted so any os can be loaded onto the device. So there's no other way I know of the os to see the vendor.

To the other guy the reason I can't see it on your rogers one is because if your running 167 then you deleted the vendor file like I said above. So I believe that's al that's needed to unlock all the options.

You know how the Vendor ID is "burned into the device" (hence not possible to unbrand)? Well I think RIM is using the same technique to have custom functionality depending on the vendor. Let's say that as of firmware .167, depending on the branding of the phone, certain features are available, certain are not. If that is the case, then no matter what firmware you will load on the AT&T Bold, that option will still not be available. Unlocking the phone would also not have any effect. Let's hope I am wrong.

I think you're missing my point. The device has a Vendor ID. AT&T is 102. No matter what carrier's OS you load onto the device, the Vendor ID will always be 102. Therefore, when the OS sees that ID on the device, it locks (or unlocks) certain features.

I have a Rogers Bold on AT&T, so the Vendor ID is 107. Therefore, the option to select 2G, 3G, or 2G&3G is available to me, but not to AT&T devices with a Vendor ID of 102.

We are going to see. I am going to have mine unlocked by HorizonWirelessOnline.com - Horizon Wireless, The World’s Cellular Repair Center ß when my IMEI gets in the database and then I will report back. What you suggest would be a new devlopment. They have used Service Books - eg ATT pushes a blank SB for BB Maps.
