JiveTalk Compose Problem

I'm running JiveTalk for BB 4.0, 1.0.0 on a 7100t with OS 4.0.2.49. When in a chat screen the text entry box at the bottom says "<Enter message here>" but there's no way to select it or type in the box. When I type a full screen text edit box pops up (the chat screen gets covered).
Additionally the first character typed usually comes up as a number as if the Alt key had been pressed. It should be an alphabetic character.
Any suggestions?
It's a slick, well thought out and well executed app beejive has developed.
