Wireless Activation Hell!!
Please Login to Remove!
I recently purchased a t-mobile blackberry, on a data-only contract, and activated it with t-mobile. I have since set up my own exchange server at home, and this works correctly. I then installed BES 4.0, without getting any errors (correct CDO etc.).
When I first tried to carry out an Enteprise activation, I could not find the icon, even in the options until I deleted provisioning from the device (supplied by t-mobile). I have also read somewhere that you cannot wirelessly activate a device without provisioning - but if you cannot access the enterprise activation tool with provisioning present how can it ever be activated?
Anyway, I have tried for two weeks to activate the device - the message "activating..." is displayed but there is nothing else apart from "retrying...".
The MAIL_MAGT_01_20051122_0001.txt log file has the following entries:-

On my domain, the user can send and recieve email correctly, and the activation email is delivered correctly. There is also an email that was delivered last night, at about 10:30:-

Don't know what this is, but when I tried to activate this morning, at 5:50am, this message was not resent. At this stage, I do not know if the problem lies with the carrier, my installation or the device - everything on the berry is version 4.0, the BES is also version 4.0 for exchange, and all exchange service packs / cdo hotfix have been applied.
I cannot work out from the log files what error is being encountered - any assistance with this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Burgerking

In the MAGT logs you supplied, the following entry "[40000] (11/22 06:52:11):{0x1D60} [BIPP] Received status REFUSED, Tag=218"...implies that the device is not registered on the wireless network.
Verify the handheld is active on the wireless network. To register the handheld with the wireless network:
1. On the handheld Home screen, click the Options icon.
2. Click the trackwheel, then select Register Now.
3. Click OK.
OR
Send a PIN message to verify the handheld is actively passing data on the wireless network. If the PIN message fails, contact your service provider.
Here's some additional links that should prove helpful for future use.

Hi - first, my advises are related to Exchange
1. EA icon will not appear unless you will delete Desktop [PROVISIONING] service book from Service books records.
2. It seems that the mail that appeared in your mailbox was not picked up by device. it means it either moved from original Inbox or any ruler moved it out of inbox .

Dumb question, but did you actually call T-Mobile to adjust your service from BIS to BES? You can delete the Desktop [PROVISIONING] service book all day long, but if your account is not configured for BES then it wont do any good.

Thanks for the help. I called T-mobile this evening, and was told that I would need to pay £52 per month in order to have this done - if only this was made clear when the item was sold.
I will look into this, and pay if I have to - I just hope that it works afterwards!! I will keep you posted on this, and thanks again for the help guys.

Just to let you know, I upgraded my contract and had BES provisioning added. The process took about 2 hours to be set up, and I was able to wirelessly activate the BB immediately after this. Thanks for the help,

*** The Enterprise Activation E-mail Message ***
When the user activates Enterprise Activation on his/her BlackBerry handheld an E-mail message is sent to the user’s inbox. The E-mail message will look similar to:
From: <---- where XX is a two digit number
To: <user’s E-mail address>
Subject: RIM_bca28a80-e9c0-11d1-87fe-00600811c6a2
Attachments: ETP.DAT
This message is used to carry data between the BlackBerry Handheld and an associated server. Please do not delete, move or respond to this message - it will be processed by the server.

ENDETP 1127174334
The Blackberry server checks for new E-mail messages, by default, every twenty seconds so the worst case scenario is that the Enterprise Activation E-mail message will be in the user’s inbox for twenty seconds. As the user will be, most likely, out of the office when the Enterprise Activation E-mail message arrives this should not be an issue but the Enterprise Activation E-mail message should not be deleted by any other user who is using the user’s E-mail application as this will stop the Enterprise Activation process starting. The BlackBerry server will read the Enterprise Activation E-mail message, start the Enterprise Activation process, and then delete the Enterprise Activation E-mail message from the user’s inbox.
*** Reasons For Enterprise Activation Failure ***
• Enterprise Activation sends an E-mail to the E-mail address specified by the user that includes the file ETP.DAT. If your E-mail software filters .DAT files then the Enterprise Activation will fail.
• If your E-mail software modifies incoming E-mail messages by attaching lines of text, such as “Successfully scanned for viruses by xxxxxx”, then the Enterprise Activation will fail.

Hello, I thought this topic suited me perfectly!!
I am VERY new to BES, using bes 4.0, exchange 2003 (SBS) and 7290 handheld. The installation went very well - too well in fact, but when i try to sync over wireless (or via USB) i just get the activating screen - stays forever. I have looked at log files and all i can suggest is 'BESADMIN cannot be found as a service' and restarts exceeded. There is also no policy settings in the client properties (IT Admin, View Policy) just the default. The service book seems to be failing. I have called our user support but they are not very helpful, please please may anyone help?

SMTP Gateway
I worked on this issue all day and then realised at the end that the blackberries I was attempting to provision were for mailboxes behind a SMTP gateway which was experiencing difficulties. The messages were not hitting the mailboxes at all hence no proceeding with the other checks.
