Question What Is Considered a Memory Leak?

Please Login to Remove!

Being new to the Blackberry, I'm just wondering what is considered a memory leak? I have noticed that people have had this occur with new OS upgrades, app installs, etc.

I realize that a memory leak means that your available memory goes down over a period of time... but what I'd like to know is, how much loss is considered normal and how much is a problem?

I installed a new theme tonight which I like, but have read other people have had problems with, including memory leaks. I noticed my memory went down a bit over a few hours- but I was also doing a lot with my phone too. Basically it started out at 115764784 and dropped to 114568716. Yes it dropped over time, but a very slight amount.

So how much would it drop and how rapidly, for it to be considered a memory leak problem?

Btw, thanks to everyone on this forum. I've learned a LOT in just a couple of days.

An example of a memory leak is when an app that, say, uses ten chunks of the device memory while running. Then when the app is closed/shut down, it does not release all 10 chunks, it releases only 7. Then you have a memory leak. If multiple apps do that, you start to have a problem with low memory.
I think memory leak is probaby relative and apps may be different. Not all apps have leaks though.

Well, I have never seen an application ever return the full memory amount; that is why even on a computer it's best to reboot the system regularly.

On my BB right now, I rebooted the system 90 minutes ago, and it started out at 115763144 and now it's down to 115682536. It had dropped lower than that, but some of the that used memory returned... yet, I haven't really been doing anything with the phone either.

My understanding of a memory leak- if there is a problem- is that you would see memory disappearing quickly, without any returning.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Memory leak is not as much of a problem on the newer devices. On older devices, system resources would drop so low that the phone would start deleting things like SMS and email without warning. Should not be an issue on the Tour.

(For more info, look for the Sticky in the General Forums.)
