Default Update OS on devices

Please Login to Remove!

Is it possible to update the devices running an older OS by pushing a newer version from the BES?

Like if a user is on Blackberry OS 4.3 is it possible to push them to 4.7 via the BES?

Devices that run on 4.3 can't run on 4.7. I believe devices need to be at least 4.5 in order for OTA upgrades.

So if I'm understanding correctly. If a user has a blackberry that has 4.3; I am not able to push an OS upgrade to this device?

That's correct.
In fact, there's no way to push any OS updates wirelessly from BES.
Wireless updates come from the carrier. The request to update can come from BES... but the actual software push is carrier-based.

This can also only happen under a very strict set of circumstances.
Device must first be running a carrier-approved version of the handheld OS, and the carrier must also approve the OTA version of the OS that you're intending to upgrade the handheld to.

You, as the user or BES admin, don't have very much control over this process at all.

I don't believe this is true. Please see the "BB Device Upgrade Guide"

Page #19 starts the section entitled "Using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to update the BlackBerry Device Software over the wireless network"

It's OK if you don't believe it. It is true, though.
I believe it's you who needs to read the manual.

Please be more specific. We're looking into this issue now, and according to the documentation linked above, it implies it is possible. How is the manual incorrect?

P.S. Please be constructive in your replies. It's unhelpful to simply state something without evidence. I'm not suggesting you're wrong, I just want to understand the apparent discrepancy between what you are saying and what the Documentation seems to imply. I'm here in the forum researching the possibility of OTA Device updates and if you can't be helpful, please refrain from responding and let someone who can offer details respond. Thanks.

BES simply queries the BlackBerry Infrastructure for available OTASL updates, and compares the avaiable updates to the devices currently activated on your BES.

If BES finds an available OTASL update for one of your devices, you can choose to support that wireless update and make it available to your end user devices by way of Software Configuration.
The OS is not delivered wirelessly from BES directly. The update comes from RIM's network, and must first be approved by the wireless carrier.
At present, there's only a few devices in the U.S which can be updated this way. (See here for a consolidated list: OTASL - Official BES Provisioned Versions - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection
You can't arbitrarily pick a software version at will and push it to a device. It just doesn't work that way.

I've been an active member here for nearly 5 years, and I've been around the block with BES more than a few times, so forgive me if I get a little short with people who suggest to me that I should go RTFM.

Thanks Penguin, see how easy it was to be helpful ?

BTW... I wasn't suggesting you "Go RTFM," in fact, I was doing that and came here to get clarification. People with experience like yours are why people like me come here for assistance.

Now I just need to wade through the rest of the documentation and figure out the best way to deploy OS upgrades to devices without visiting each one. There's more than 200 of them and only 1 of me.

BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager is going to be your best bet.
It's built-into BES 5, but it's a separate install if you're running BES 4.1.x.

Thanks Penguin, looking into this now. We're running BES 5.0.2 and I've been working with the Webdesktop for other device management tasks, but I see the documentation for using it to distribute the OS software.

Consequently, I spoke with RIM about this issue earlier today. Their first-line tech support told me it was possible to do OTA pushes initially, which is why I was confused between the original post here, the documentation, and RIM support.

Now I understand a little better what my deployment options are. I'm hoping that wireless deployments we have more control over become a capability at some point in BES 5.

Thanks!

I have a problem creating the software config too. I am creating it for the AT&T 9700 and my OS is "OTA approved" I created the share on the BES and when I Browse to .exe I downloaded (I'm doing this in BAS, under Software - Applications - Add or Update Applications) I get a "The server encountered an internal error that prevented from fulfilling this request" Gives a whole boat load of code and at the bottom of it all says the full stack trace of this root case is available in the JBossWeb/2.0.0GA CP Logs. Which I looked in and there's nothing that helps me figuring out what the problem is!!! Ideas/Suggestions welcome
