Default Appears that a regular data plan will work

Unlike older BlackBerrys, the Z10 and future models don't require tiers with BlackBerry Internet Service or BlackBerry Enterprise Server support in order to work their push messaging magic. Those migrating from a regular BlackBerry plan won't have to worry about switching, though. The lone exceptions are subscribers who have barebones, social-only plans where BIS serves as the filter. While the switch could lead to price hikes for those cost-conscious users, it's otherwise good news for BlackBerry devotees who've wanted the same choice in service as the rest of their smartphone-owning peers.

Reported by Engadget and confirmed by Crackberry.PSA: BlackBerry 10 doesn't need a special data plan

Sorry; thought I had posted something about that. The days of BIS data plans are over. I took the SIM from my Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8) and popped it into a Z10. Works fine.

Downside? No more compression. Data usage will be much, much higher. Also, with all sorts of new fangled apps (available "soon") data usage will skyrocket.

I had not seen this before so thought I would post here in the B10 section.

Data economy was a point of pride for RIM. Few cared I guess.

what about the BES10 server in combination with a BB10 device ? Should this not give me the same features = compression + efficient handling of email then with a Blackberry ?

Nope. BlackBerry left the decision to the carriers.

Just got a call from my carrier (Bell) seems my Z10 can't work as intended unless I sign up with a BIS plan from Bell.

Ask your carrier first.

That would mean that either your carrier blocks https traffic (which is also used by AS) - sound not likely, or, they are able by provisioning the device to disable some of its features - not nice, but possible.

They said it was needed because they (not sure if Bell or BlackBerry) still needs BIS for some of their features to work. BBM would not work for me when I swapped my SIM.

afaik, Rogers and Telus will not make it mandatory.

I think you will see the carriers offer the Z10 with the regular data plan and Imply it will be cheaper. Reality, the people who have current unlimited data plans will be switched to one that is limited and therefor actually end up costing more because of the data usage as mentioned above.
It's all about the bottom line.

Is data use really going to go up.? for those of us that use these phones as a business tool...i can't see it. For those that are switching from iwhatever, then yea, i could surely see that...or am I missing something here.?

I do understand however the changes will in fact affect those with the barebones type of plans..

Depends on your personal usage:
Plain Text Email: about factor 10

I did, and am moving on. The only reason I stuck with BB was data compression. When my contract is up or my workplace pulls the plug on BES, I"ll probably get an iPhone.

Sometime after I posted I read an article citing as reason the fact (alleged fact maybe) that very little of the data used nowadays can be compressed for any significant benefit.
