Force 4.1 on 72xx??
Please Login to Remove!
I have searched everywhere and not found answer to a problem. I was recently forced to downgrade from a new 7100g to an older unlocked 7280. I am in withdrawls and would like to be able to use themes (other then just the 4.0 package compiled by jibi). Obviously deleting just the vendor.xml file will not solve my problem, because there is no release (even HK CSL) for the 7230 or 7280 that is past 4.0.2.xx. I know that it will likely crash or lock up, but Im too curious not to try it! Can I force the 7290 HK CSL software onto a 7280? Or any other 4.1 software for that matter. Yes, there is bluetooth, quadband, 2x memory, I know. I still would like to prove myself wrong first. Has anyone any knowledge on how to force load an incorrect OS? Can I do permemant damage?

OS 4.1 is not supported on devices with less than 32MB. Period.

I know it isn't "supported". Im asking can it be forced on? What will be the results? Has anyone done this or accomplished it? Does it simply lock up?

If you are so curious and after you have been told that it is not supported you keep insisting, then why dont you just go for broke and see what happens. Obviously everyone else out there has heed the warnings for a reason. But you want to know so go for it and hope for best. Mind you I am not either encouraging you or endorsing the attempt just telling you that since you do not feel the warnings are warranted then go try it and prove us wrong.

Agreed, there is no teacher like experience. Let us know your results.
The worst case scenario is that you'll have to use javaloader.exe to wipe the device and then reload the 4.0 build.

I realize the warnings. I also know there is about a 99.9% chance it will fail. What I was asking is HOW to do it. No one had yet to answer how to go about doing what I wanted to attempt. I finally figured out on my own to use javaloader. This didnt have anything to do with if it was a good idea, I simply needed the information on how to put the files onto the handheld.

Download the software, install it on your PC with the desktop manager turned off and the BB disconnected. Search your PC for a file called Vendor.xlm and delete it. When you have done this and only then, start up your Desktop manager, connect your BB and if it is going to work it will prompt you to upgrade, follow the prompts and then sit and wait, be patient it takes a while and above everything else do not disconnect or play with it until it is done and it is back up if it works.

You aren't completely following. I know how to delete the vendor.xml. I'm talking about force loading an OS not intended for a specific handset onto it. By following your instructions, the OS package will not appear in BB Manager because the ALX will tell it that its for a diffrent model number. You can download OS versions all day long, but RIM is smart enough to try to stop people from doing what I have been describing. I could either recode all the ALX's, or ofcourse I now know you can manually load them using javaloader. Blackberry manager will not load the software for a 7290 onto a 7280 for the exact reasons everyone listed here on the thread (it was created for a unit with a completely diffrent internal architecture). Anyways... incase anyone wants to know the answer to my questions... its use javaloader and have some serious free time.

Well if you follow your own logic, and one cannot load a different OS to a different class of BBs, why then are you trying to do what you yourself already have admitted you cannot do as per RIM.

You've hit the nail on the head; both methods will allow you to upload the .COD files onto your hardware.
Now quit debating, dammit, and git-er-done! I'm curious to see your results.

Well if someone has a lot of time to waste, they could see if they could hack together apps from 4.1 and kernel from 4.02. Probably won't work but there may be one or two things that work.

Please let us know how you are doing.
In the past when people have tried (UNSUCCESSFULLY) to apply different OSs to different handhelds, they have given up because YOU CAN'T DO IT.
But feel free to try. The 7290 4.1 code is not designed for and can not be forced onto the 7280. Plus it won't fit in the 16MB memory space.
But never mind that...

Tried to do that that with the 4.02 Phone app on top of the 4.1 OS once (I'm still mourning the loss of my "dial-by-name" functionality). It was a spectacular display of error messages and reboots ...
