im not going to pass judgement on the wifi till i test it at home on my own connection, even if it is slower than edge i dont even really care i just want that phone!

also i found it pretty annoying when he kept screaming WIFI THIS IS WIFI in the video.

Guys dont you know the BB browser is rendered and compressed through the BB servers while the wifi is rendered by the phone itself.......

Its beating it via EDGE because its compressed and push and rendered by the BB servers which are optimize for the browser

If you really don't care for wifi why even bother getting the 8320? The selling point of 8320 is first blackberry with WIFI be it for uma or data if I knew it would be this slow I would've bought the 8300 2 months ago and not waited this long.

I found it pretty funny when he kept saying wifi...edge...wifi...edge wtf?? I said the exact same thing when I tested mine out. I'm sure the guy testing those two devices in the video had no intention of putting down the 8320 he was probably just disappointed in the speed of wifi just as much as a few of us here on the forums.

I still hope they'll at least do something about this before my 14 day return policy is up.

Don't use the wifi browser. Use the "Internet" browser instead. The "Internet" browser works over wifi with data optimization.

(You can compare the speed by turning off EDGE completely and use the "Internet" browser)

I will not claim to have tested extensively, but I cleared the browser history and cache on my 8320 and timed loading both the Gizmodo and Apple sites along with the video. My 8320 loaded both sites faster than either device in the BG video. It completely blew away BG's 8320... while noticeably faster than 8300 it wasn't more than a 1-2 seconds faster.

For those considering the 8320 and WiFi, I would not take this test as a death knell.

Just a quick edit. I thought I was finished testing but then decided to do the Cnet.com load test. This time I fired up the Stopwatch application on another mobile device. I cleared browser cache. Timed hitting load "Cnet.com" along with the video. When my 8320 finished loading, I hit the stopwatch... 18.9 seconds after Cnet.com loaded on my device, the 8300 finished.

well im on tmobile, and i currently have the pearl, i never bothered to get the ATT curve because i dont like the color of it. i've been waiting for a new blackberry and i was deciding either on the 8820 or the 8320. im just sick of the pearl and want something new.

I only did one website, cnet.com because of size limitations...
I am returning my 8320 today and when the rep asks why I will show him the video on my 8300.

Now I know it's not just me. King do you mind posting a video of 8320 edge vs 8300 edge? I only have 8320 and 8100 I'd like to see how 8320 par up against 8300 when both are on edge.

It looks like the the 8300 did not render the page exactly as it did on the 8320. Do the browsers have the same settings? (ie. table, background, stylesheet support) Maybe the 8320 is more HTML compliant.

As a sidenote: Don't expect too much from a mobile browser and Wifi. The latest Windows Mobile devices with Wifi aren't blazingly fast either. CPU and browser rendering heavily dictates the speed. Has anyone tried UMA/H@H? Is call quality good or bad? I think that would be a good measure of Wifi performance. Just a thought.

FWIW, my experience with the WiFi vs. EDGE is that WiFi is a lot faster. IM and web browsing are very snappy with WiFi. That's my anecdotal evidence.

But don't forget about the biggest advantage of having WiFi on our BlackBerry devices: simultaneous voice and data. That's a big deal to us power users. When I am on a conference call for an hour, I used to get slammed with a bunch of emails after I hung up. Now, the power of BB in being connected (able to know what's going on and respond as appropriate) happens even when I'm on the cell phone.

30PSI - Unfortunately, I only have 1 data plan, so I cannot try both phones with EDGE.

UMA is definately cool and works great. Same thing goes for using voice and data at the same time.

Jeremy - Can you post what settings you are using, maybe something is set up wrong? What browser, etc... BTW, "internet browser" which was used on the testing, was faster than "wifi browser" which went even slower.

Nrivas - They both had the same settings. Not sure about display.

My whole answer - speed isn't everything, whether it be on a motorcycle or a BlackBerry.

Let's see you browse your internal LAN (work or home) on your 8300. oops.
Let's see you make UMA phone calls at home where you have no cell signal on your 8300. oops.
Let's see you initiate a VPN connection to your corporate LAN over Wifi with your 8300. oops.

I am comparing EDGE on both an 8300 and an 8820 to Wifi on an 8820. That could be the difference--I'm using WiFi with 8820 whereas this thread is about WiFi on an 8320.

The web browser settings on the devices are default.

Some more details on my WiFi experience:

IM is very fast. The time to send a message is way less. Same for delivery and read confirmation.

Web browsing is quick. Any page that I try loads a lot quicker as compared with EDGE. This is especially evident with downloads. Downloading GMM, for example, takes maybe two seconds with WiFi. I've never seen the download status bar move so fast.

FYI, I have noticed this same difference in experience on three completely different wireless networks and several different EDGE network locations, so that should reduce the effect of some variables.

The bottleneck is the browser. You should see how fast the iphone or itouch is over wifi. Even the Nokia symbian browser over wifi is a lot faster. So I don't think it's the CPU speed as much as it's the browser itself.

I'm with rivviepop. The little increase in browsing speed is nice but I want the 8320 for UMA calls.
