Thinking of buying a Pearl tomorrow now that Cingular finally is going to release one.... Wondering if anyone has been sucessfull accessing the modem feature through bluetooth instead of the USB tether?

If they can write a script to do it on a Mac, why not a PC? (I understand that Windows is pretty lame, but still, there has to be a way)

Yes, the same initialisation string and *99# should get you connected when you roam. No need to change anything.

Whether your service actually works when roaming probably depends on what sort of tariff you are on. GPRS roaming should work independently from Blackberry roaming (which with O2 requires a separate monthly payment to enable), so you should be OK.

I kept getting an error 692...

Called T-Mobile and he said I need to update my software which I thought was up to date already... OOPS... Hopefully this fixes the problem for me. Would you guys recommend updating the Handheld software though? My brother did it once and the phone just stopped working after that....

Also I did notice that the Command String he gave me is longer than what people have posted here... I don't know if it'll make any difference but he said to enter

Whats up guys,
Bought the pearl about a month ago and have been loving it. I just connected my new hp laptop to use the phone as a modem. IM loving it, the speed is 115.2 kb/s and its fast enough when i am on the go and love that its included in the $20 data plan (I called and confimed with t-mob that it was included). Great forum and i will frequent it often. thank for the tutorial.

What I posted before and what I do:

Put the directions into an e-mail. Mail it to yourself. When it is on your BB, save the e-mail on your Pearl.

I have many e-mails in my Pearl saved folder on "how tos" related to the Pearl.

Dont bother trying to use the Pearl as a modem as your going to get speeds LESS than a 56k modem does.

I decided to try it seeing the threads here and on other boards and the speed tests I ran "multiple times" with a 1/2 meg file, the larger the file the more accurate the tests, were only average 30-40k at best. I did get one slighly higher around 50k but averaging is 30-40k.

When you connect the Pearl to the PC, it says connecting at 115k (I forgot to write it down but its 115 or 118k) but its VERY slow. Way to slow for any kind of graphics, music or video downloads. So slow that I aborted the loading of many pages as it was so frustrating.

I ran a few tests using:

and the best I did was 46k for a 1/2 meg file. It took 86.81 seconds to download.

I dont think its my PC as this is only a 4-5 month old Dell running at 2.8 with a gig of ram.

Yes, i've gotten it to work via bluetooth sans tethering plan. I'm currently unclear as to whether I'll be charged for tethering post-facto.

The same instructions work except you want I think:

wap.cingular as the #
as the username (case sensitive)
CINGULAR1 as the pw (case sensitive)

This response able looks promising. Is the BT connection of the phone to a laptop the fastest throughput way to use a Pearl as a modem? What is the average data rate achieved? Is a USB connection faster? Is the set-up using an off the shelf Cingular 8100, does Cingular permit this or do they block this feature forcing us to use hacks and work-arounds?

Would really appreciate more detail on users who have succeeded to use the Standar Cingular Pearl as a modem.

I hate when USB ports fail. They are such delicate things.

Old issue since you got a new notebook, but did you check Windows System Properties - Device Manager to make sure it was not the XP driver that was crapping out?

I have a mac so I'm not sure how to otherwise enable tethering besides BT. Thus I have done no quantitative speed tests a) because there is no alternative for me, b) I'm scared of tethering rates being charged to my bill, and c) I haven't had a need for tethering yet (e.g. no travel).

From what I recall, the speed was good enough to say check emails, google calendar or fantasy team, but not enough to manage a source code repository, watch videos or other mid to high bandwidth applications.

i have the modem going over BT on my 8100... havent rec'd the bill yet, im interested to see the data charges!

Its awesome though, i dont have to carry an aircard around anymore!
