Default ICQ being discontinued as of Dec 4, 2010

Please Login to Remove!

If you use ICQ on your BlackBerry, it's about to come to an abrupt halt (does anyone use it, anyway?).

Per RIM KB24935:

Quote:
As of December 4th, 2010, BlackBerry smartphone users will not be able to download or use the ICQ for BlackBerry smartphones application.

Never used it. Was aware of it, but never looked it up until just now. I see on wikipedia that it was purchased from AOL by a Russian firm this last April.

Hi,

I installed the ICQ app OTA yesterday.

The installation went OK, but the ICQ icon is missing from my BB, so I am not able to launch the app.

When I enter settings/applications I find the ICQ app under addons.
How can I add it to the menu to get it started?

Or is it because ICQ being discontinued?

Best regards,
-Adrian

If the app was there to install, then you are troubleshooting an install issue. Being discontinune means just that, and the fact that the app was there means it apparently hasn't happened yet, at least so far as the app file being removed from availability is concerned. EDIT: Looking at the OP, 4 December was supposed to be the end date.

So troubleshoot the app download. From your account of things it appears to be installed. Look for hidden icon, icon in a folder, or hidden icon in a folder. If you don't find it, delete it from options > applications and try downloading again. EDIT: But given it's well past RIM's announced date, I don't know why you bothered. I'd delete it an forget about it if I were you.

IMO, since RIM said they were discontinuing both the app and the service, you should probably just bid it goodbye and move to another IM app.

Really? so it's good night for ICQ eh. oh the memories-they take me back to the Mid to late '90. *sigh* Spent many many nights typing away with Zeppelin records in the background... Good times.
