Default Does IM (MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk) get charged as text messages?

Please Login to Remove!

I got a rude awakening today when I was billed for Text Messages when I don't remember having used any.

The billing rep at T-Mobile told me the charges were from MSN messages. I was totally under the impression that IM through the chat applications that come pre-installed were included in my unlimited data plan.

Can someone please confirm whether or not I should be billed for these?

Thanks!

It is according to the application you use.. some are SMS-based, most are now data usage.

The OZ application is SMS based.

Thanks for that super-fast response.

All the applications used were the ones that came pre-installed on my T-Mobile (USA) Curve 8320. They show up as Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. How can I find out if they're data or SMS based?

Do you have a data plan with you carrier as of yet? If you do both MSN and AOL Yahoo messenger should run off data plans. I would look into getting JiveTalk. Cheap program and probably the best multi-network IM client for the blackberry.
Hope this helps

I have unlimited blackberry through t-mobile - doesn't that count as a data plan? I can use google maps with no problem.

In the UK on T-Mobile that should be enough as far as I know.

Over in the states, I would not know I am afraid. I think alot of their tariffs and inclusive data plans etc are different.

the preinstalled IM clients use text messages. this is buried within the t-mobile website.

you need a client like Jivetalk or IM+. these use data and not sms.
