Default Activating a used BB

Please Login to Remove!

Just when I thought I'd graduated beyond newbie status by using my 7100t for several months without any pleas for assistance, I went and bought another (used) one, and am back at square one. :P Actually, I don't need any assistance yet, but am wondering about any intricacies or challenges that may arise as I attempt to activate the unit -- which was, presumably, previously used on the TMO network -- using my wife's (non-BB) TMO SIM card. I assume the local TMO reps will eventually get everything working, but I can envision problems relating to the unique IMEIs and PINs, the previous user's account, etc. Anyone have any educational horror (or, dare I hope, success) stories?

Yes, I had problems getting my 7290 registered on BWC because the unit had been previously used on Cingular. The awesome tech at my local store (who had also taken care of migrating our whole family to Cingular from ATT and fixed all of the billing issues) called me back after letting him know about the issue, and put me on a three way call with RIM. They fixed the problem in a couple minutes.

I had a 7280 on T-mobile that was previously used on a BES, that took several weeks to resolve. Getting the carrier to move a device out of one of their own BWC's is easy, and RIM can help, but out of a BES is something they usually can't help with...

Thanks much for the feedback. Sounds like I'd better hope for a knowledgeable tech like mrogers had, and for a unit that wasn't on a BES. My odds for the latter are markedly better than for the former, but, whatever the case, please wish me luck!

If you will be just using it for phone, there should be no issues at all.

If you add the BlackBerry data stuff to the account, then you may run into the problems described above.

Well, so far things are progressing as I'd feared. When the unit came in, I called TMO to add the BB option to my wife's plan. When I mentioned that the PIN/IMEI had probably been on their network before, they suggested that I call back after I had gotten home, charged up the unit, and had a chance to look up the numbers. When I called back, I reached "Kevin," the most obnoxious rep I've ever encountered (not surprisingly, he was assigned to the late night shift), told him that the BWC showed a PIN/IMEI conflict, and offered him the numbers in case it would speed things up down the road. He declined to take down the numbers and basically told me I was an idiot for not waiting 3 days before calling. I stated that I understood activation could take 72 hours, but was offering the numbers to avoid starting at square one at the end of that time period. He made a few more snide remarks and terminated the call when I attempted to extract some accountability. Predictably, the 72 hours elapsed, plus a bonus 24 hours, and the BWC still shows a conflict. TMO now says that its a RIM problem, and that they'll pass the IMEI along to RIM, but that I should give it another 72 hours before calling back. None of this is unexpected, I guess, or even egregious, but I would still like to give "Kevin" a loving punch in the nose.

i'm planning on buying a used bb and i'm a newbie. there are 2
questions:

1. in the security options there is it policy [default] activated
april 2006. does it mean that this bb has an it policy in it (which
maybe restricting me from browsing, installing etc)? if yes, can it be
wiped so it has no it policy in it?

2. how to know whether the bb has been activated or not on any
carriers? then if it was activated, can i activate it on my carrier?
in fact, who does have the authority to release the activation: rim or
previous carrier or my carrier?

thanks for your help, i'm really lookinhg forward to it.

Yes it can be removed just search for IT policy removal there are plenty of posts about it.
You may get some flak as removal of an IT policy is a highly debatable topic for which I personally take no sides. good luck

amanchen,

You'll get more answers, more clearly, if you post in a separate thread rather than in one with a well evolved discussion started by someone else.

Luck.
