sending MMS - phone died

i was sending an mms, put the phone back in my holster. when i pulled the phone out to check if the mms sent properly, my phone was dead. no display, keys wouldn't respond. i plugged it into my pc to see if the battery died. battery charge was fine. this is actually the second time my phone has died like that. the last time, i believe i pulled the battery and i was able to power it back up.
anyone else experience this?
i'm running the latest 4.5.0.108
