Default Remote blackberry administration using the MMC

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All

I am running version 4.1.4 on my BES and I want to install the MMC on a few machines to delegate administration to a few users. When I run the installer on the 4.1 CD it seems to work but gives an error in the 2nd part of the setup that the database version is wrong and the installer cannot continue.

Is there a specific installer for the 4.1.4 Blackberry Manager MMC or am I missing an important step somewhere?

Thanks

Yep

If you run setup.exe on the BES CD from a desktop, there is an option to just install the Blackberry Manager.

I have a feeling the purple hippo may have been sarcastic with that comment ...

I'm guessing the 4.1.4 downloadable installer (which would be 4.1.4 upgrade), would allow you to install the BB Mgr as you've done a partial install and it'll recognize that and allow you to do the upgrade. you should then be able to connect to the db without a problem

Great that's just what I need - sarcastic purple hippos.

I tried what you suggested and ran the 4.1.4 updater, but it says 'You must sign in using the same account that you used for installation stage of the setup program.' I am logged on using the same account as earlier.

I can't help thinking if RIM had laid this out in a standard MMC it would be so much easier.

Wasn't being sarcastic, I honestly didn't know there was an MMC Snap in! I still remote desktop across to my servers!

I ran the install of the BES Manager on some remote PCs here. To do so, you need the full installation version. Otherwise, you'll have to do it in stages, starting with the first full installation version that you have on the remote PCs, and then running the upgrade on the remote PCs until it matches your BES version.

As HDawg mentioned, you should run a custom install, selecting only BB Manager to be installed. Good luck!

WHOOPS! well actually with 4.1 and Exchange it isn't an MMC, its a standalone app / management console, but not a Microsoft Management Console

Ah that explains it then, always new Exchange needed more management than Domino :D

Just tried what you suggested and went back to my original 4.0 media. Installed the Blackberry Manager from there (it really was a Microsoft MMC back then), and then tried upgrading to 4.1. Got the same message again:

Database specified has a version that is not supported by this Blackberry Manager. Please upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Server first then run the upgrade again.

I think I'll give up on this - might see if there's a better way with allowing helpdesk remote desktop acces and locking the server down so all they can do is open Blackberry Manager.

Get the full install version from RIM for 4.1 SP4 and you should be fine. The 4.1 BlackBerry Manager is antisocial with 4.0 databases so that path won't work.

Sorry, I assumed that you were upgrading from a previous version of 4.1.x. Full version install would be your best bet then.

Mahoward is correct. you must use a full version of BES up to the current SP you have installed on your BES. So, if you are running 4.1.3 ont he BES, you need a full version of BES 4.1.3 to do the remote install. you can't use 4.1.2 or 4.1.4. E-mail RIM and they will send you a link to their FTP site to download the version you need.

If you have a TSupport account with RIM, login to the KB and click on Downloads for TSupport Subscribers from the list in the main section. You can download the full versions from there.
