Default Storm as a Modem and Charges

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
Does anyone know if the storm can be used as a modem for my laptop? The hotel I am staying in at the minutes charges a fortune for wifi.

If it does, I assume this will be covered under my unlimited data carrier tariff (UK Voda)?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes you can use it to tether your PC. As for price you need to check with your carrier.

With Verizon, it's an extra USD$15 per month to use a BB as a tethered modem. Don't know if Vodafone charges extra for that or not.

bloggs96, not *positive* about the storm, but with other BBs, you have to install the Desktop Manager software and have the BB Device Manager running in order to connect to it as a modem.

Further, if you're trying to connect via Bluetooth (as "now I have paired" implies), you need to go into the Device Manager settings for Connection options and enable connecting via Bluetooth.

I think the desktop software for the Mac is called PocketMac and I think I saw a post that blackberry.com now has an updated version of PocketMac to work with the Storm. But, I really know nothing about connecting a BB to a Mac. The procedure for tethering may well be completely different. If it even works at all. (which is one reason why I don't have a Mac)

TBH, I waited for around a month or so for my goods, paid extra postage, etc, etc. When Kris answered his phone, he was very nice and pleasant and the various "fob offs" were abundant, ranged from really busy, to the office staff never posted it as they should have. Eventually he had a spare 5 minutes and told me not only would he send me what I had ordered, he would return my postage and send me a radar gun to check my setup.....

Well eventually got what I ordered, but non of the extras..Couldn't be arsed chasing up a "good will gesture". I would never deal with him again.
Hi Kris,

Still waiting on postage/courier refund for major delay is sending me Macbook Pro. It would appear from web search that you have also let done other people, they would all appear to get same excuses.

Myles

Tethering for Verizon is $15 extra dollars per month.
However the tethering may or may not work if you travel around the world.
I have spoken to Verizon Tech-Support and they tell me it depends on whether or not cdma or 3G is available.

Be careful, and good luck.

Talking Yes, you can Tether a Storm

I am absolutly positive that: Even if you have the unlimited data package and connect to BES, you still need to pay an extra $15/month for the tethering.

I attempted to connect using the instructions/manual setup via the "use your BB as a Modem" thread, and yep, it works! You can connect! and as soon as you open your browser, it takes you to a Verizon activation page, which requires you to check an I aggree checkbox and click subscribe, which then adds the $15/month billl to your account. I have not been able to "get around" it.

It's BS really. Verizon getting thier money in any way they can. If there was a way around it, I would do it. ya pay $200+ for the phone and then ~$50/month for data + the regular phone charges, and they want more $$$ if you use the internet connection you are already paying for on a laptop. It's aggrevating.

On the + side, if you do sign up for it, it's pretty nice. I have used it before and have tested downloads at 1000+ and uploads at 300+kbps. I have played WOW while in a car going down the highway..with no lag... lol... so depending on your area/saturation, it can be nice.

If your area is saturated with data users or if you have a weak signal, it's not so great. Luck of the draw on location.
Good luck! I hope to see a revelation post soon!

I am a sales rep for VZW.

If you have the 29.99 Email and Web for Blackberry package, tethering is 30.00 a month.

If you have the 44.99 Blackberry Corp Provision plan, tethering is 15.00 dollars a month. Period.
