Default How to Unlock?

Please Login to Remove!

My contract with ATT is up in November and my 9800 will then be mine free & clear.

ATT has always unlocked phones for my wife and I in the past but this model they have been giving us pushback - they unlocked her brand new iPhone but they are telling me they "don't have access to" the unlock codes for this 9800.

I don't believe them - but that's besides the point.

Once I own the phone outright how can I get it unlocked? Is it legit to use one of the online (ebay or other kiosk type) unlock providers? I want to be able to use this as my travel phone - but I want to be able to update the OS as well as come back to the US and use it on ATT... so nothing shady.

Need legit unlock, etc. Is ATT the only way to do this? I'm sure this has been discussed before - I searched and found tons of threads but nothing that really answers this specificlly.

Thx.

Are you talking about the commercial/advertisement or another link?

In the past I have paid for unlock code(s) and as soon as the OS is updated the phone becomes locked to my carrier again. I'm looking for something that is permanent.

He's referring to the to link at the top left... BlackBerry Forums Support Community - Unlock Your BlackBerry!!
It's a legitimate and reputable unlocking vendor.

Once unlocked, a BlackBerry cannot re-lock. Whatever you had happened to you in the past I don't know, but the device will not re-lock to the original vendor.

Its probably because I had a shady vendor in NYC do it...

Thanks - I kno this has been covered 1000 times (or more) but I wanted clarification. Both my BB and my wife's iPhone re-locked as soon as we put our ATT SIM cards back in and updated the software however after the unlock (we paid $5 per phone for) we were able to travel and use an international SIM without issue but upon returning home and updating software we were unable to switch to another carrier on the next trip.

iPhones relock themselves when the software is updated on them
BlackBerrys, once unlocked, are ALWAYS unlocked - even after you update the software.

No, the BlackBerry did not. Your memory is just now good.

Be sure to go through the first 3 steps of the BlackBerry Torch unlock code instructions to make sure your phone is actually network locked.
  1. Turn on the Blackerry 9800 Torch with a non accepted SIM card
  2. Go to Menu > Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > SIM Card
  3. Type MEPD

It should say Network Active or Network Enabled. (that means it is network locked).

yes the BB was unlocked and yes it is now re-locked. I'll just pay another $10 and try to unlock it again.

No, it wasn't. If it's locked now, it was never unlocked.
It's not possible to re-lock a BlackBerry. Simple as that.

We won't convince him. Since it is impossible to re-lock a BlackBerry, obviously it wasn't unlocked in the first place.

that's quite possible however a vodaphone SIM worked in Europe so the guy did something to the phone so it would work.

I was asking if there was a difference between a random person selling an "unlock code" and getting an unlock code from your specific carrier.

Also, it is quite possible to re-lock a blackberry - we just don't have access to the tools that can re-lock a device.

Default How to Unlock?

Hi,
It is unbelievable that your phone's network provider saying that it cannot be possible.i am sure that you can get the unlock codes from the online providers like ebay.com,zedge.com,mobile9.com etc.when i tried to unlock my phone i went to the provider called Mobileunlocker.com here they are giving the codes with instructions to enter the code by ourselves.so it might be the better provider to you to get the unlock code easily.you also asked about your os update when it was unlocked.I am sure you can update your OS and you can also use your phone with any GSM network.
