Please Login to Remove!

You sure can. Any of the apps that you don't use you can remove. PTT, Voice Activated Dialing, BBM, BrickBreaker. Anything along those lines. If you don't use them, you can remove them. The process isn't too difficult.

Here are the steps:

Is there anything else other than deleting apps?

I think your sig is backward... unless you are going for "Sidekick is better than *"

< is Less than... L< that's how you can remember it L for Less than <

> is greater than

So five is greater than four is also 5>4 - or 5>4>3>2>1

or

1<2<3<4<5

unless you mean that sidekick is greater than all??

I think it's a timeline of devices he's had.

As to the issue. Removing applications will give you more memory. It isn't necessary. You're at 9Mb right now. I usually recommend somewhere around 14.

What is going on here? I don't feel comfortable performing these modifications - is there something else I can do? I don't need PTT - but if I can't uninstall it, I don't want to F with the bios or code to force delete it.

There are things that I never use - Yellowpages.com, Brickbreaker, PTT, GPS, Password Keeper, etc. but can I delete them through DM rather than through file code?

You can delete most of those apps through DM. I don't think you can delete PTT through DM. I think Yellow Pages may be a service book.

This is getting WAY over my head. I just upgraded the OS - is there any way to remove non-essential, non utilized apps without reinstalling the OS all over again... My IT department has it's period this week... month... year... well they always have it....

As Dan stated above, you could use MaxMem. It is a free application that you can install directly on the device and it can remove PTT, Voice Activated Dialing, Themes, etc.

Thanks again for everyone's help - it seems to hang up when I make changes in my outlook desktop emails and I'm IN my email on the blackberry - as if it hangs up while the BB syncs with the BES or something... Additionally, our IT department does a sh*tty job and our Outlook generally sucks - this could have something to do with the hanging up... I also get 3-500 emails a day so moving them around to different folders must cause a sync headache for the device... anything I can do about this or just live with it?

Guys I'm getting through this but having issues - I'd like to keep ATT theme (102) but delete PTT, Voice Activated Dialing and possibly a few other things - Is there a list of apps anywhere? I don't want to start deleting random things and have to look for unwanted side effects, etc.

Thx.

What is a service book & how can I get rid of that app/service book?

You can go into Options > Advanced Options > Service books, highlight the service book, press the menu key and select delete.

However, when you do a battery pull, the service book will be pushed back to your device. It's best just to hide them.

As to your previous question. If you're not comfortable removing .cod files from the Java folder, use MaxMem. It is a pretty easy interface to use. If you do mess up, you could always reinstall your OS.

Thank you - I've been pulling my battery often enough that removing those service books would turn into a pain - I'll just hide them. As long as they don't take up any additional memory I won't worry about it.

As for the rest of the apps - I've loaded the new OS, deleted the Vendor.xml file (Still don't know about the Device.xml file though) and in the process of going through the apps, etc. and trying to figure this out. I really just want to get rid of Voice Dialing & PTT - are there any side effects with doing this?

Also - I loaded BB Maps, it is my understanding that on ATT there is no way to get BB Maps for free with OS 4.5 correct? I looked at the threads in the GPS & Mapping section as well.

Thx! I'm getting there... This is all new and like learning a new language to me!

I believe removing the VAD also removes the ability to select different folder images when you create folders. It mentions that in the thread. Other than that, there's no real side effect.

That's what I've been reading lately about AT&T and BBMaps as well.

When removing themes - I chose to keep ONLY my 102 (ATT) theme rather than install all themes and remove from JAVA folder - do I need to delete all other than 102 themes or will only 102 be loaded since my .alx file only says Vendor=102?

On the same token - do I need to remove fav 5's for T-mobile since my .alx file only has 102?

Thx for the help so far!

Is Documents to Go a third party software? It is on my new RIM 8820 (warranty device) but not on my old one.

Docs to Go is included in OS 4.5. That's why you see it there.

Thx - I guess I did not have it selected on my old phone.

Here is the key question... ATT shipped me a new phone as a warranty unit. I now have both phones setup exactly the same (apps & memory wise) with the exception of individual settings & BES Activation. The problem that I was having (freezing & locking up after OS 4.5 install) was mainly due to BES issues (my outlook PST/OST mail file was 30+GB) and sync issues between desktop clients & BES/blackberry.

Other than a clean trackball & non scratched case, is there any reason why I should not just keep using my old BB and ship the warranty unit back to ATT? Is there a lifespan on these units? My current 8820 is just 12 months old and I need to get another 6-12 months before my IT department gives me a new device. My battery is going but the warranty unit does not come with a new battery.

Thx again for the help - if there is any way I can give back I certanly will.
