Default Rebooting With Car Charger

Please Login to Remove!

I've only had my BB Curve for 2 days & so far I love it. But, I have come across one glitch that I can't seem to figure out a resolution. I have a mini-usb car charger from my previous phone (OEM Motorola charger) which I was told should work with the curve without any issues. However, as soon as I plug the charger in, the BB reboots.

Searching on the forum I have read that power interruptions can cause the unit to reboot - would plugging it in cause an interruption. I'm at a loss as to how I can determine if the issue is the result of a faulty BB or if it is a faulty car charger, or if this is normal operation (which I doubt).

Once I power the BB back on & it goes through the reboot cycle (takes about 1 - 2 min) then everything appears to be fine - battery icon shows to be plugged in the the unit appears to charge.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the BBForums, Bonnie.

That reboot would be a darn good reason not to use that charger.

The symptom of the reboot seems justification for not using the car charger, but does anyone know what causes certain car charges to deliver poor service?

Do different mini USB chargers deliver different Amps?

I am trying to get guidance on mini USB charging compatibility of BlackBerry and Motorola devices. My Curve 8310 came with a wall charger. The Motorola ( T505 ) came with a car charger. I want to consider using the wall charger with the Motorola and the car charger with the BB.

I am interested if Amp requirements of devices that charge via mini USB are different such that sharing charging apparatus may cause damage to the devices.

I only use my old Mororola AC chargers for my BB. The amps are slightly less from the Motorola chargers (.55 ma vs .7 ma, both at 5 volts) so that's probably not what's causing problems in your car.

For my car I have an incredibly cheap no name charger bought from a company in Hong Kong. It works just fine. No reboots or anything, so clearly your Motorola charger is defective.

Edit: I found the BB charger and compared the specs. The reason I stopped using it is that my Razr does not charge with it. Motorolas are notoriously finiky about the power being exactly the right voltage and amperage, so the Motorola may not work with the BB charger. It shouldn't hurt it, charging just won't happen.

+1 on that

There is prob something wrong with the charger, or its not "perfect."

I've seen that happen before. Don't blame the brand, i've seen many people using OEM Motorola chargers on their blackberries with you problems at all, it might just be your charger specifically.

FYI, regarding amps on charger. Blackberry chargers are constant current and amp. Motorola is normally a varying range.

Definitely try a different charger before it causes any damage to your bb. It shouldn't reboot like that. I have a moto car charger and wall charger that I use for my bb and my wife's moto. Works just fine. On the flip side, if I plug my wife's moto into power with a bb charger, her phone says "unsupported charger"
