Default Gmail without a data plan

Is it possible to install Gmail without having a data plan? The times when I do need to check my email, my near a hot spot. It would be easier this way than having to log into gmail.com and everything

No, you must have the BB Data Plan for push email. Use the webmail account is what you have limited yourself too.

He is asking about the Gmail app, not pushing email.

Yes, you can download the Gmail app using wifi and then check your mail using the wifi with the gmail app.

He may be asking that, but I don't see how from the question posed you could imagine that he is asking about the gmail app.

since i don't have a data plan these days, and because i live somewhere there are a lot of open wifi connections, will the Gmail app still work or is it only for people on a data plan? Would the gmail app know that I'm using wifi instead of EDGE?

I have a Bold 9000 so YMMV, but when I turn of my GPRS radio and try to access GMail via the Google app I get:
Quote:
This program requires a working data connection. Please check your signal strength.
That is as close as I can get to checking to see if it will work with out a data plan.
