Standby+Update Q's

Hi i am new to blackberry devices, and i have a few questions. First one is that when i hold down the mute button my phone doesn't go into standby mode, could this due to the version OS i have? The version i have right now 4.6.0.151. Battery life seem to last about 2 days or so with some occasion of listening to music. Which recommended version i should update too that is rather stable, and has good battery life? Thanks!
