Ok.....this is just killing me.

So I bought the curve 8300 at the end of October 08. Great phone, no complaints. Of course, if only I had played the patience card back then I would have had the chance to see the curve 8900 come out which I am just absolutely in love with. I am now in a difficult position. I am utterly stuck with my 8300 because of course I signed on the 3 year plan and the 30 days has passed for my ability to return the thing. Rogers' upgrade policy also disallows upgrades for smartphones (discounts) until 24 months has passed.

I already tried to go back to rogers and complain, or pretty much try to think of some way to get this switched, but it looks like I am just stuck.

At this point it seems the only way I will be able to switch would be to purchase an 8900 with no terms (just the device, 600 bucks....ouch) and then I could just carry my current plan over to that phone correct? but I was thinking I could ask for a birthday or xmas present this year :P.

Can all you tech savvy folks please give me your opinions on whether this is ultimately a worthwhile move. And please do not look at it from an economic/efficient view, look at it from a "I am a guy who loves technology and I want a really badass phone that can do what I can now, but better" Money really isnt that big of a deal to me, but I would at least like to hear/know that the device rocks the socks off the 8300.

Honestly, this device totally rocks the socks off the 8300. I went from the 8310 to the Bold to the 8900 and it is the best for me! It feels awesome and even tho it isn't that much smaller it makes the 8300 feel huge! Also the 8300 feels like a brick to me after using my 8900. However, the phone is NOT too small, it's just right. The screen not only looks pretty, but honestly works better for the phone. It helps out in everything you do. Plus the speed difference is night and day. Also, I love being able to have quite a few apps on the 8900 and not have to worry about memory like the 8300. I can keep stuff I would have never kept on the 8300. If you like the 8300 you'll LOVE the 8900!

Bryan, I like the 8900 and the Bold, they are much better than the 8300 which I have owned in the past. Why don't you look online to purchase an unlocked 8900, I bet you could find one for less than you think and if you have all accessories and box and manual for your 8300, try selling it on eBay or craigslist, I bet you could get good money for it as well. That is what I do with my upgrading and trying out different phones. My wife just rolls her eyes, but she knows I just buy and sell phones and that way it doesn't cost me too much.

I carried the 8320 for two years and purchased the 8900 out of pocket. (eBay for $400).

The difference is night and day. The form factor is more functional (less the location of the charger port) and beautiful to look at.

You'll gain:
A REAL web browser
A REAL camera
Video recording (if you haven't pushed BB OS 4.5 to your 83xx)
A REAL media player
GPS
A REAL display
WiFi

You'll lose:
Having to close out EVERY app after you minimize it to keep your phone from lagging
Having to do a battery pull once a week... just because
Having to use Google Maps' quasi-location service with your navigation

I also went from the 8320 to the 8900 and I can safely agree with everything said previously.

I don't think I could spend $600 to upgrade, but if you can figure out a way to spend $200-$400, do it! you won't regret it.

I bought my unlocked 8310 off of ebay last June. Loved that phone. Still, I jumped on the bandwagon when someone posted that they were selling to existing customers if you called up and asked for it and bought the 8900 pre-release in January. Was it worth it?

Absolutely!

I agree with all the prior advice --

I've had the 8700, 8800, the pearl and then the 8300 (first on Cingular/AT&T, and then another one, unlocked, on T-Mobile for the past couple of years). All were fine, but the 8900 is a significant step up in terms of features (as listed in prior posts: processor speed, memory, display, camera resolution/quality, video quality, fit/finish, 4.6.x OS, etc, etc, etc.

As much as I loved my 8300, having used both, I would be very disappointed going back to the 8300 after having used my 8900 for the past couple of months. The 8300 was great when it first came out -- and it's still good -- but the 8900 is a major, noticeable improvement.

I probably wouldn't pay $600 to get the 8900 -- but as noted above, if I could do it under $400, I'd probably jump on it.

I put off the 83xx series and stuck with my 8700G for two years, due to no list theme available and no side scroll wheel. Jumped to 8900 and, while the track ball is still not my favorite interface, it's an awesome phone. You wont be disappointed.

That was also my very first thought. The new Curve is a neat sexeh device, not a doubt!


But,
you might want to consider waiting for the Niagara (or whatever its official new name), the hybrid of the Bold and Javelin (*drool* - shouldnt be too long until that one comes out... and the old Curve is definitly a pretty good device for the meantime...

Thank you very much for all of the info...now l0ki what is this bold 8900 hybrid....is it looking like something that WILL be much better than the 8900? I must say I loved the bold at first but the 8900 overtook it....but a hybrid of the two? My god thats my dream right there. Is this something due to release in the near future?

If we believe first reports its going to be the 9630 aka Niagara ... its not yet officially announced.
Rumor has it that Verizon might release this in May this year, which would be nice, but to my guess its more likely to be released sometime within Q4/09 or Q1/10.

Am I the only person that loves having WIFI on their phone? I also like the look of the 8900 more than this phone shown here. I hope the release version comes with better fit and finish. Never did like the flat keys on the bold and don't think I would like them on this phone either. 8900 is amazing. If you have trouble loosing 3g web browsing DL the browser app BOLT and its fine when on the go. This is my first BB and I came from the iphone to the G1 and then to the 8900. All I have to say is once you go blackberry you never go back....

Internal memory is also a big drag. I can't have all the apps that I want.

I had the 8310 and I went to 8900 and I see a major difference.
Very good camera
Web browsing is nothing to compare
GPS and Wifi is a big plus
The main thing is that the screen reclusion is so bright and clear that itxxx8217;s just a pleasure to read emails and browse the web.

Please note: its 2g if you want 3g you have to go for the Bold

Hi Everyone, I made the upgrade to the 8900 and after 3 days of use, It is a 4 letter word, L-O-V-E. All the things said about it in the thread are accurate. Faster, better screen, even with a GPS in each car as an Emergency Manager I now have the ability to have GPS out of the cars, The problems with battery lasting have not happened to this unit yet and the memory is soooo big, I plan on adding some additional apps to it.
THis is a very cool Blackberry to use and play with.

BTW how is the battery life compared to 8310? I know it depends on what kind of apps are running..but roughly...?

Also, does 8900 support a 8G memory card?
