Updating OS issues with Vista (or maybe it's just me?)
Please Login to Remove!
I have been attempting this for awhile now, every fix I have found I have tried, and it seems to like I might get somewhere and I never do. My first issue was the computer was not detecting my BlackBerry which I have resolved with a couple suggestions from old threads.
I've uninstalled DTM and reinstalled it with the settings suggested by John Clark, I've downloaded the OS a couple times, each time deleting the vendor.xml file and clicking apploader. I have tried this with a couple of OS's for the 8520 and each time it acts like it is updating...and then it says it is done with no change.
I've followed the instructions on how to update my OS, and have checked for variations on other sites.
I've figured out something, I feel like a complete idiot. But to be honest, I don't know where to go from here and I need to suck it up and ask for help. So I'm going to be descriptive in what I do, and maybe someone can tell me where I am going wrong.
I install the OS from the link provided.
I have followed the path c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. This is where I delete the vendor.xml file and try apploader. I noticed today that apploader has a last modified date of Nov 19th, 2009, when I got my BlackBerry.
Am I installing the OS I want elsewhere? And if so, where can I find it?
This is what I'm figuring at this point, And it's close to 11 am and I'm going a little nuts from reading. I need to go lie down and if I can't sleep I may be back to respond to suggestions, or maybe in the morning, I have the day off tomorrow and I want to get this done.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Are you running vista 64 by any chance?

How do I find out?
Edit: Googled how to figure it out, it says Windows Vista Home Premium
Editx2: Second search http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...sked-questions says I have a 32 bit operating system

Go to Start then Right Click on Computer and in the resulting window it will say "System Type:" and it will be either 32bit or 64bit.

"To find out if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, do the following:
1.
Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
2.
Under System, you can view the system type."
I have a 32 bit operating system.

Okay that will be fine as I updated mine on a 32 last night.
When you uninstalled desktop manager did you make sure it deleted all the directories? Also when uninstalled it might be worth uninstalling the OS from the system also. Then reboot and Reinstall.

That's what I'm thinking, start from scratch. I notice a common trend with vista users having issues. I know how to remove a program, but how do I be sure I have deleted all the directories?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything a couple times. I trying different things now, like disabling my firewall and a couple other things I have found.
It acts like it's going through the process, then just says that it is done, and it says for 5.0.0 for the 8520, but the set up process doesn't actually happen, just says done. DTM still doesn't recognize it either with modifying the settings.

Easiest fix would be if you had another computer you could possibly try it on first?
The directories you would want to ensure were deleted would be c:/program files/research in motion and
c:/program files/common files/research in motion.

I don't think those got deleted, that may be what I need!
I'm also trying to install the OS to the computer again, and doing at as 'administrator'. Someone else stated that worked for them as well.
Either way, you've given me some other ideas and I am grateful for that. It's close to midnight so I'm gonna grab some sleep and hopefully there are a couple more suggestions when I get up. I have seen quite a few threads where people have not found resolution and have just kinda given up. I don't want that to happen to me
Edit: One more thing I have to ask, when it gets to the screen for Device Application Selection, it shows what I have on my phone, and this is the only area that gives me any options through the set up, I'm not missing anything here am I?

You are correct that is the only options in the setup. Also are you using DM to install the OS or loader.exe?

Loader.exe. I tried DTM and I'm not getting there with that either.
I tried removing the firewall and running as admin as a last ditch effort, didn't work. I'm done for tonight, tomorrow I'm going to remove all programs, reinstall with the corret settings, and try again. I'm wondering if it is because I did not remove the directory.

One last thing, you don't have any other OSs for your device installed on your computer do you? If you do, remove them and see what happens so that the loader only has 5.0 to look at.
If not then please post your findings on here when you reinstall Vista.

I'm stuck still, I don't know what is wrong. I redownloaded DTM, made sure it is set to not look for updates. I redownloaded the OS, went into the path given and deleted the vendor.xml file.
Here's some screen shots to give an idea, the second one shows there is no OS to update, it just wants to back up and restore during the process.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to search to see if there are any extra files, but the search function is missing from my start up menu, I'm reading on resolutions to fix this and have not got anywhere yet.

In the first image you still show the Vendor.xml file.

That's before I delete it! I just want to show what it looks like before I start to see if anything looks wrong. I delete it, then I go to my recycle bin and empty it.
And I do think it has something to do with the vendor.xml file... I just don't know what *cries* I'm on hour two of today of trying to get this to work, and I spent hours last night as well. I don't think I have ever been this frustrated.
I'm going to take a breather and have a salad, then I might post another screen shot of how it looks after it has been deleted.

Try to relax. Frustration can only make things worse.
What do you mean the search is missing from your computer?

I'm trying to search alternatively than using the start menu in Vista. I'm searching for other xml files as well as other files with the word vendor and I'm not getting anything. I just restarted and checked the folder and the vendor file is still gone, so I double clicked loader.exe to start the process, and this is what I get *added a picture showing a screen shot*
It's as if it thinks I have not installed the 5.0 software. *Edit: Just added a second photo showing it is there when I go to uninstall/change programs*

In DM, go to Help > About DM, and then click the Device Software tab. What is listed?

Also, if you want to try to search your PC, try doing it through the Command Prompt.
Go to Start > Run and type cmd <press enter>
Type C: \ <press enter>
Type dir /s vendor.xml <press enter>
Is anything listed?
