Default Interesting hypothetical phone charging question/situation with pics!!

Please Login to Remove!

I just got a new CD player installed in my car.

Car:

CD Player:

The deck has full iPod controls, along with charging capabilities using a USB hook up like this:

If I use the USB data cable that came with my phone:

And insert it into the powered USB port in my glovebox, will my phone charge?

I have not tried it yet, and I am thinking that it will not work. I know that certain software has to be installed on PC's in order to get the BB to charge. So, anyone want to place any wagers on this?

Not an expert, and this is just a guess, but I would think USB is USB and you could charge it the way you are thinking.

I'm not sure either Heavy. You might check with the people who installed the stereo. Assuming of course they are who installed the USB port in the glove box.

If it's standard USB, I dont see plugging it in and trying will hurt anything. If you have a different USB device you care less about, give it a try first.

<rant> Why do car manufacturers believe that everyone has ipods? Every new car I have test driven in the last year have ipod connections. Well great, but I dont own an ipod . Do the auto designers not know that ipod is proprietary and and this type connection is rather useless(without an adapter) to the other millions of us who own other mp3 type players? </rant> sorry, i had to say it.

I bet it will charge, but slowly.

If you turn the phone off it might charge a little faster.

Wirelessly posted (8100 Strike 2)

Should charge, it won't hurt to try.

If the USB pinout is the same as a standard USB port, it should charge it. Assuming whoever installed it, wired it in correctly.

Well, iPods are very popular. I would imagine that they are probably the best selling mp3 players on the market right now. There are a few options though. There is a plain AUX input on the back of the deck for other types of electronic devices, and there is the standard USB cable that comes off the deck. I am not sure what all that will power, perhaps another type of media device given that you have the proper USB connection for it. I will try some stuff out today to see what happens.

Thanks for the information everyone. I will post my results back later today.

Well, I had my doubts about this working, and I was very optimistic when I plugged it in. It does not work. It says that the USB is not powerful enough to charge, and to be sure to install the proper drivers. I look at it like connecting it to a PC without DM installed. It simply will not charge.

OK, no big deal. I have a car charger already. I just wanted to see if this would work, so I could have one less thing in my car.

Market share.

I've seen plenty of new cars with Aux ports though.

I put an Aux port in my car on my own. That way anything with a 3.55mm jack can be used. Ipod, Curve, any other mp3 player...

This deck has both. iPod control USB cable, and AUX input on rear of deck. I need to put the AUX cable in and just let it sit in my glovebox.
