You need to look for UMA, that will enable what you want to do

I am not sure, but I don't think T-Mobile released the 9000. Tough to get UMA on a non T-Mobile device.

And if I recall the 9000 doesn't support UMA at all...seems like it was one of the first 3G phones that did not have the UMA capability, regardless of whether you can get to the engineering screens, etc. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong...it's been a while.

Yep, that's correct. It did not support UMA at all.

Thanks for all replies. I guess I'll need to upgrade. Which model should I look for? (UMA support)

The 9700 had true UMA (in that a WiFi call could automatically transfer to a 3G network) but the 9700 was only 3G.

The 9900 has a form of UMA which is really WiFi calling. Once you left the range of the Wireless Access Point the call drops - it would not transfer to the 4G network. The 9900 is a 4G device.
