i have emac desktop and i cant find the 'bluetooth' modem but 'blackberry' using the sprint pcs vision and i try connect and dont work.

THERE ARE SOME MINOR THINGS WRONG IN THIS FOR VERIZON!!!

But 95% of this is correct. There are two things you should do to change.

First in the Verizon

username: (yourcellularnumber@vzw3g.com) not vzw3.com
password: vzw
number: #777

now when you first pair your bluetooth before you get to the network preference....

do this.

system preference
Bluetooth setup
fill in information
finish it.

then in the bluetooth screen where it shows all bluetooth devices highlight your BB

go to bottom and click on the (gear) icon symbol thingy

click configure device

then click ok

it will ask to to allow the computer to access info click ALLOW

NOW THIS IS WHERE YOU CHANGE AND WIN!!!!!

click phone vendor and in the drop down change to "other"

that will change phone model

username (yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com)
password: vzw
number: #777

click next


then move to the part of this bottom instruction where you enter into the network preferences.

add new connection

bluetooth

same username, passwrod and number as before.

I tried tethering via USB but was not able to do this but I have tethered via Bluetooth. Different posters have reported that they have been only able to tether via BT only. So the answer right now is BT only.

What are the speeds that you are getting?

I have gotten 220 down and 78 up. I think that this is pretty decent. It seems that this is pretty standard on VZW and Sprint. I'm not sure about the other carriers but if you can reply and add your speeds it would be great.

What is your service provider?

My service provider is Sprint. This was frustrating because it seemed like most post had to do with T Mobile or Cirgular/ATT and recently VZW. Based on the differents post that posters are reporting that all can tether. I will consolidate all of the info I found. Each carrier has to have a login and phone number

Do I need a special script?

I did not use a special script. I just followed a couple of cobbled together instructions from different sources - some on these site and some from other sites. So my answer to do this would be that you don't need a script.

Do I need to get a special plan to tether?

Depends on the carrier.

Sprint: No - it is included in your BB plan.
VZW: Yes - you have to add it for $15 per month. And you have to call

How can I tether my Blackberry 8830 with my mac?

1. Make sure that you pair your BT with your Macbook Pro.

2. Go to System Preferences.

3. Click on Network.

4. Click on the pull down for Show.

5. Choose Bluetooth.

6. Skip all the other tabs and leave blank and click on Bluetooth Modem.

7. Click on the Modem pull down and choose WWAn Support.

8. Check all of the boxes underneath the Modem pull down.

9. Close out and you will see a little phone icon in the status bar next to the airport status bar. Click on it.

10. Go down to the Open Internet Connect and click on Bluetooth.

11. Fill in the telephone number, account name and password .

12. Save it.

13. Turn off your airport.

14. Click on the phone icon and then click on connect.

15. If you have paired your phone correctly and your mac you should see the blue light start blinking. On your phone it will ask for permission. Click Yes.

16. You should see a connection dialog box with a send and receive bars on it.

17. Congrats you have tethered your Blackberry 8830 to the the mac.

Again thank you for such a great forum. Even though I'm new I hope that you don't mind that I'm doing this post. I hope to give back by contributing. I know there are more knowledgeable posters on this forum and I would appreciate any additions to this thread.

Thank you I did your change and it worked, but i had to show how to get to the screen where you change the vendor because my macbook pro which i bought this year didn't give that opportunity at first. I had to config to device.

Somehow or other most of you guys seem to have skipped over ButterBerry's instructions in how to tether your BB8830 to Verizon using USB tether... I believe at much much better speeds. If you download the Verizon Access Manager, look at the Contents of each of the files, you will find the Blackberry files (kext files) that he refers to. If you copy these to the directory he mentioned, and then install VZ Access Manager, your tether will work perfectly! It's not rocket science...

Of course I agree that VZ Access Manager isn't the most elegant interface, speed is more important - and it works.

Yes, Bluetooth tethering via DUN worked too... at slower speeds...

I really don't understand why Verizon didn't provide this setup... they told me that VZ Access Manager would work... and it didn't. And I don't like to be cheated by Verizon!

Try it after you try Bluetooth tethering and please report back.

i have read through all your posts carefully and i still can not get past the "could not negotiate a connection with the remote ppp server" message. I verified my settings and tried the different advanced options for phone vendor. is there anything else that could cause this message? i just had the service turned on today - is it possible that the activation has not gone through yet?

Castyourstones. RE Post of 5/6/08, I did it and everything worked perfectly on a VZ 8830 to a USB tethered Macbook. I must have had some software problems as a result of trying to get bootcamp running, and VZAccess stopped working (it said it didn't detect a connected device).

I went and followed the original direction, but the USB720 Aircard is no longer an option

I tried a few of the others, and they do not detect the tethered BB

Any advice???

OK, folks. I'm amazed. After the download speeds I'm getting via bluetooth on my Macbook using Verizon, there's no need to use USB! Uploads average 350 and downloads average 1000. Thx for all the help in this thread.

Connecting the 8703e by USB is simple. Is anyone able to connect the 8703e to their PC laptop or Mac via BlueTooth? So far I've been unable to use Bluetooth.

I am having an issue. I was using Mac OSX Tiger and was able to tether my BB Curve 8330 just fine. It was great because my 2Wire modem hates my mac. However, for Christmas my tremendously thoughtful wife bought me Leopard. Now, I can't tether my BB as a modem. It keeps saying, "The connection has failed. Please verify your settings and try again." I've verified everything that you guys have said here, but I can't find a place to choose the WWAN. I have to pick a wireless service provider. So, i choose Sprint and it automatically chooses PCS Vision. I leave the username blank and the password blank, put #777 in the number blank and get nothing.

I'm looking through Crackberry forums, too, but nothing's helping.

I would love to be able to do this on my MBP with my Telus (Newfoundland) 8330, but the instructions are a bit old. I have tinkered with it for several hours over as many sessions, but with no luck.

Can someone update this 'how to' for 10.5.6? The screens and steps are apparently quite different with this version of OSX.
