The 8350i is an iDen phone and AFAIK, only works on Nextel. Don't think you can use it on CDMA as it is a totally different technology.

But you should be able to replace the Nextel SIM with a Boost SIM.

ok, it seems that there is a difference between the manufacture specs and what the carrier will allow.
the blackberry site when using the compare feature shows the following

Wi-Fi: 802.11b/g - used only by 8350i

Dual-band 900/1800 Mhz GSM/GPRS networks - used only by 8350i

Dual-band 800/1900 MHz CDMA2000 1X Ev-DO networks - used by both 8330 & 8350i

and carriers

8330 -
Alaska Communications Systems, Alltel, Amazon.com, Appalachian Wireless, Bell, Bluegrass Cellular, Boost Mobile, Carolina West, Cbeyond, Cellcom, Cellular One (NEPA), Cellular South, CloseCall America, Credo Mobile, Deltacom, Inland Cellular, LetsTalk, Metro PCS, MTS, Nex-Tech Wireless, NTELOS, Pioneer Cellular, PTCI, SaskTel, Sprint, TBayTel, TELUS, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Partners Solutions, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile, Wirefly

8350i -
LetsTalk, SouthernLINC Wireless, Sprint, TELUS

i guess my hang up is the 8330 does not have wifi or tethering capabability.

i dont want a contract but i do want fast service.

do i need to consider a contract to get what i want?

i was mistaken
8330 has tethering but no wifi and the boost dealer told me that people have had there services cancelled without notice or recourse for tethering to the boost cdma

the 8350i has wifi but no tethering, seems like two usless combinations of options.
what do i do, bite the bullet and get a contract and have an iphone at a discount?

maybe limited tethering wont get me in trouble with boost, and when wifi is available, my laptop should receive it as well as the blackberry wifi?

Can't tether via WiFi as far as I know. Not set up to work that way.

This is not correct.

The 8330 uses 850/1900 MHz CDMA 1xEVDO, whilst the 8350i is 800 MHz iDEN and 802.11b/g WiFi.

You have to use an app like Tether to use the 8330 as a modem for the internet. Sells for $50.00, but you can find it on sale for half price sometimes. People being cut off from Boost Mobile for tethering may occur, I have not seen it as a complaint on any Boost Mobile related forum, but it is probably for over utilization according to the TOS. You just cant run a web server through your phone, or download full length feature films 24/7. If you don't use the phone as your primary source of internet service, you should be fine.
