They will protect the screen but won't prevent it from getting dirty. Your shirt is probably the easiest way to clean the screen on the go.
I also use Endust for Electronics wipes once and a while to clean my screens.
Lately I'm starting the think screen protectors aren't really a "must." I've used them on tons of devices. Because I'm careful with my device (it only goes in my pocket alone, sometimes I use a case etc.) I don't think I've ever ended up with a scratch on my screen. And yes, I know that's because there a screen protector on there, but the protector does get scratched just like the screen would.
I don't think there's any harm in them other than the fact that the screen just looks clearer without anything there. I've yet to install one on my 7130c and probably won't.
Really lgreenberg, that hasn't been my experience. The screen on my prevous 8700s had those little scratches that you see in sunlight almost immediately and more every day. Big visible scratches followed. With screenpatronus (which I bought on your recommendation) its been a month and the screen protector surface is scratch-free even in sunlight. They're tough. And of course you can always replace it. I just have no reason to yet.

I have nothing on mine, it has been dropped 6 or 7 times now since November, I have scratches all over the body (hope to replace the shell one day), but the screen is prefect, no scratches, no dirt. Since I wear it while riding my motorcycle it has lots of opportunity to get dirty.
I only wipe it on my shirt once in a while, it is a great little screen

Just to drag this out, I confidently took the same view as many of you until I got a serious scratch. So when I got a new 8700 under warranty I wasn't taking that chance again.

Iuse the Oakley microfiber lens bag and lens pens. This has worked for several Palm Pilots and phones. I will likely get the screen protectors mentioned though.

i got the screen patronus on right now.
it is great.
i had that ugly screen protector on from tmobile while i was waiting for the screen patronus. after i got it, took the original screen from tmobile off, cleaned the screen with a lint free glasses cleaner and put on the screen
patronus. AWESOME!

I never heard of it before and do not know how it would work on an 8700 screen.

It's like a suction cup lined with microfiber fuzz. You just twist the cap to renew the cleaning properties. I used to get tons of them for use with night vision, and use them on everything. I have several palm pilots with perfect screens, as well as BB, GPS and camcorders. Clean screens don't get scratched as easily.
