Default ETA for BES 5.0?

Please Login to Remove!

We currently run BES 4.0 on a dilapidated server in the UK. We got BEs for free from Orange or O2 cant remmeber. However we have no upgrade provision so we will have to buy the upgrade.

However we plan to move the BES to the US, upgrade the hardware and upgrade the version.

I would rather wait a couple more months for 5.0 instead of going to 4.1 and being again without upgrades for a couple years.

Question

I think your going to be waiting for more than 2 months. I was at a Blackberry sales luncheon and there was no mention of BES 5.0

What makes you think we have to have all the 4.1 service packs first??? BES 4.0 was release after BES 3.6 service pack 5, and we've had a couple of 3.6 service packs since. Likewise, BES 4.1 was released after BES 4.0 service pack 4, and since then we've had service pack 5. It's only logical that after BES 5.0 is released we will still see new service packs for BES 4.1.

RIM's current plan is for a spring release from what I've heard (from RIM) but with no clear dates yet. These things can run away from schedule of course, but it's not information I've heard from some stupid rumour.

RIM will stop sales on BES 4.1 in March. As BBAdmin mentions, their current plans are for a Spring 2007 release for BES 5.0. I agree with you that it'll be a surprise, but they usually come within 1-2 months of their target dates for BES, so I'm guessing that we'll have it no later than May/June.

1. for free updates get a Tsupport contract
2. If you don't want to bother with updates then you might not want to go to 5.0 right away. Inital Software releases always have weird bugs in them.

service patches are free. major upgrades cost.

so 5.0 will have patches but they wont cost.

I had a "RIM Roadmap" luncheon with our SAM a month ago. 5.0 isn't scheduled until late first quarter to early second quarter as stated above by Jibi bbadmin. It has some excellent features - if they all come to fruition.

Simon

What BBadmin says is true...both him and I work in the UK for different companies that get direct updates on roadmaps from RIM. Some of this we can share with our customers, and let's be frank a vague Q1/Q2 delivery date for rel 5.0 is not exactly top secret. I think you need to have a word with your account manager from your mobile network to give you more useful info, especially given the number of devices you have..

Of course if you were interested in contemplating changing provider then no doubt both of us would be happy to give you a quote, but it's pretty tricky matching the deals that 'government' gets directly from the moby networks..
