Doubtful. The PlayBook will be running a new OS called (or made by) QNX. Unless, of course, QNX includes some kind of emulator for BlackBerry OS apps. I doubt that though. I'm sure RIM would have been touting this feature if it did indeed exist.

Hard to say since it hasn't been released yet. But I agree with Rambo. The QNX OS would likely require QNX version of apps.

But we will have to wait and see.

No it will not.

So far I have found no such runtime on the PlayBook emulator that I'm using for development here. The emulator is running on a new Linux based OS and that's why RIM wants new apps quickly posted to the app store so that users dont get disappointed with the playbook just because of the lack of the apps.

I think RIM should do something about it.

I hope they are working on some sort of emulator that would allow BB apps to run since if they want the Playbook to be successful, they will need apps and what simpler way to do it than to make the thousands of BB apps available.

Based on posts here, does anyone think that BB is waiting for more apps to be developed before offering up any kind of release date?

Hmm, the official RIM BlackBerry PlayBook site states:

Rapid development environment
* Reliable BlackBerry Tablet OS, powered by QNX technology
* Supports POSIX OS, SMP, Open GL, BlackBerry® 6, WebKit,
* Adobe Flash, Java® and Adobe Mobile AIR

Mr. Lazaridis has gone on record to say "BlackBerry 6 apps will not run on PlayBook" also stating "Initially, the Majority of apps will be coded in Adobe Mobile AIR".
Since the PlayBook will feature a runtime or BB6 so that BB6 OS and apps can be displayed on it - its the same thing; but direct applications will NOT run on PlayBook without the BT Tethering Screen Sharing functionality.

POSIX applications, Java, and Mobile AIR applications, not to mention Webkit HTML based applications most likely will run on debut.
