i think the BGR mock-up looks better than the actual device.

Yeah, but it proves that RIM is going after the consumer / prosumer market. I personally will snatch a bold when they come out.... I had an iphone for 3 months...and I REALLY missed my physical keyboard. To each their own.

Oftentimes mock-ups look better than the real thing, because they are usually "dream designs," but I have no problem with the (looks of the) actual device.

Looks good to me. I do like that there are some few physical buttons for that quick access versus iPhone. I wouldn't mind testing it out if my company OKs it but won't go out of the way to purchase one on my own.

The mock up was merely the Bold with the screen elongated and the buttons moved to the bottom.
