Default GPS - Location On / 911

Please Login to Remove!

On the 8830, under OPTIONS, Advanced Options, GPS, GPS Services it says 911 ONLY or LOCATION ON.

Im assuming with LOCATION ON if there was a emergency the authorities or whoever would be able to locate you if you didnt actually get the chance to dial 911?

Also does that setting with LOCATION ON drain the battery faster than if it was set to 911 only?

Thanks,
Tommy

No...all it means is that if your city has E911, or ENHANCED 911, that when you dial 911, the dispatcher's system can see where you are. Not many cities have this yet. As to the battery, I imagine it uses SOME power, but according to federal law, the GPS can never be COMPLETELY off...so even if you turned it OFF, it would be on for E911 purposes.

What you just mentioned would be correct for the GPS setting of 911 ONLY, meaning if you dialed 911 the dispatcher could locate you, but what does it mean when its set to ALWAYS ON...

This is the response I received from Verizon concerning the GPS app which is included with the 8830. They disable the full functionality of the APP on their side. Here is a link to the online petition to get them to enable it. Verizon Blackberry GPS Petition Petition Per the Verizon Rep:

Verizon Wireless is committed to providing the very latest in products and services. Verizon Wireless does not provide support for 3rd party GPS software that would be required to make full use of the 8830's GPS capabilities. As a result, the 8703's GPS functionality has not been enabled so that we are able to provide a standardized level of functionality and support for our advanced devices. We are unable to state if or when additional GPS functionality will be enabled on the Verizon Wireless 8830. We understand and apologize for any frustration regarding this but we are only able to provide information regarding products or services that we are currently offering. We are unable to disclose any unconfirmed information because it would be subject to change and could raise expectations that may not be met.

What GPS app are you referring to? Im not asking about a Application, im wanting to know about the feature that is under Advanved Options, like the prior post said the GPS locate feature has to be enabled by Federal law, but whats the difference between ALWAYS on and 911 ONLY... and how does that affect battery....
