Default Why did they change the usb port?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a reason other than they want people to buy new cables. I like a lot of things about the tour but honestly my 8830 was a better phone? If it didn't have that tiny audio jack I would say it was perfect.

Anyway is the usb port faster or are the old chargers bad for the phone. I just can't think rim would do this just to upset people.

They went from Mini USB to micro USB. Micro USB is the standard for devices now.

Just part of changing technology, the way of our world. If we didn't have companies that used the newest tech we would still be using those phones in a bag that weighed 10lbs.

I had one of them! Motorola with the 12v battery that was the size of brick.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8830)

The mini USB port was a definite failure point for the 8830 as well as other BlackBerry® devices. The micro USB is much more reliable long term.

They made the USB port smaller and the headset port bigger.

You can get an adapter to continue to use your existing USB cables....about $5. I've found it at, let me see, either TMobile or one of the other carrier's stores.

I did not mind the micro USB, but why did they relocate it from the top left corner to mid right side. It makes things harder to use the keyboard while its plugged in than when it was plugged in on my previous 8830. Anyone see any logic in the design change?

I read it's because the new chief of design at BB is a lefty...

And yes, by 2012 ALL mobile devices will be using microUSB (unless of course Steve Jobs has his way)

Because of the placement of the USB port I cannot charge my phone while it is in the windshield mount (the universal type I got from VZW that just squeezes the phone on both sides). Does anyone know of a windshield mount that grips the phone high enough as to not block the USB port?

I agree on the location comment. Hard to talk on phone in car when charging.

The EU is either in the process of, or will soon be, requiring common charging ports across all mobile devices sold in EU countries. Micro-USB is the standard that is currently selected. So, it makes sense for hardware manufacturers to fall in line as soon as possible - and wag the dog - economies of scale means this change will affect devices no matter the market they're bound for.

Personally, I like it already. My Motorola headsets all use it, my iPhone external battery pack uses it, etc. One car charger, one travel charger, etc.

Makes sense for me, makes sense for the environment, most of all, makes sense for my wallet.

It makes sense for RIM and other manufacturers as well. By 2012, I won't expect to get a charger or sync cable with my phone anymore. That should save them $2-5 per device, which hits directly on the bottom line.

I'll have to go by there. Do they ask for your phone number when you buy things like verizon?

I've bought three of these there, and just tell them I'm not w/TMobile. They haven't cared.
