Default Finally have a problem with the Style or maybe its just Sprint

Please Login to Remove!

After typing a few rather long texts over the last few days i have learned now that i am limited to only 160 characters, Before someone starts saying sms stands for short message sending i know this already and have been with at&t for the last 6 years or so and do not have any limits on my text messages, My question is simple, is this a sprint thing or blackberry thing, i know it cant be os6 because i had that on the torch and could text as long as i wanted, if its a sprint thing, i guess its back to at&t i go.

Until someone comes along who can tell you exactly, I believe I've read some services will automatically break up long SMS into multiple messages. I could be wrong. But it's worth a search to confirm. At any rate I suspect that is why you didn't have problems before.

I can't offer a better answer.... I don't use SMS. See what others say.

Yes, I believe Sprint will only allow you to type a 160 character message, whereas other carriers will allow you to type as much as you want, and they break it up into 160 character messages upon sending.

Here's the deal.

CDMA carriers do not support Extended SMS on BlackBerry.
CDMA carriers DO support Extended SMS on other devices.
GSM carriers support Extended SMS on BlackBerry and on other devices.

On Sprint, the message can only be 160. It will NOT be automatically broken up into multiple messages.

Your options are 1) just create a new message when you reach the limit, 2) use MMS and you will get 1000 characters, 3) use email or 4) use an app such as Textender or Beyond160 to send longer SMS.

Oh, I would give Sprint a big longer. I've found them to be the best service we've ever had, with the best customer service people. I've never known texting to be any different, so to me, it's not a big deal. I'm just saying, on the pro vs. con side, Sprint has always come out way ahead on the pros. YMMV though.

Means more to me to be able to just type my message and send it and not be limited to a certain amount of characters.

Press Enter to send the message and start in the next message. Problem solved.

Seems like a minor issue.

But go with whatever works best for you.

It's not a minor issue when you are paying for a service that other companies have no problem with letting you text all you want.

I have a question, does ATT allow you to send a text to more than 20 contacts in a single message? Not sure if this is a concern for you or not just asking.

I am not sure of the answer, but you could always create a group on your device and then send to that group.

If you really like the Style, I believe there is a third party application that will let you text longer messages.

Also, don't forget to look at it from the other person's perspective. If I have Sprint and you have ATT and you send me a really long message, I'm still going to receive it in 160 character 'chunks'. Not a big deal, just saying that just because you can send it that way doesn't mean the people your sending to can receive it that way.

Yes, there are 3rd party applications such as Beyond160. It's been a while since I've used it but I believe it works with the native SMS app, it just breaks the message into multiple messages, each 160 characters.

I also see this as a non-issue. For me at least. It's not something I would leave a carrier for, especially if I get good coverage and good rates with that carrier. But, to each their own.

Unless I am mistaken, even when AT&T lets you type messages over 160 characters, each SMS still contains at most, 160 characters. So if you type something that is 400 characters, it may look like one text to you, but any recipient of yours, no matter what service they are on, is going to receive 3 texts from you.

Not if you are texting someone on at&t they get the full message, and like i said i may seem like an ass but i dont really care how it comes out on the other end just like to be able to type and send it is a hassle when you are trying to copy and paste something in a text, remember not everyone has email to receive a long text.

How it displays on your screen is how it displays sometimes depending on the device and software for the sms it will put in in a running sms but other then that the receiver has it chopped into 160 characters at a time. if you are only worried about what it looks like to you then you should be good to go I though that it will still show on the screen as a one body message on the style. if not get crunch sms and have a field day, I hear it is just like sms on the iphones

Cheers

The 9670 has OS version 6.0 on it, right?

Compose a Text Message. Press Menu and select "Attach". The message will be changed to MMS. That's how it works on 6.0.
