Default Proxy setting for BES 4.1.7

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I am new to the BES and I have a question regarding setting a proxy for the BES.

Our environment is as follows: -
BES V4.1.7
Proxy: Squid
BlackBerry handheld: Torch 9800

A user using a Torch 9800 connected to the LAN via Wi-Fi. He then tries to access the Internet via the Squid proxy but have no success. The following message is displayed on the handheld: -

Unable to connect to the Internet, please try again later.
If the problem persists, please contact your service provider.

The handheld is able to browse the company Intranet with no problem.

I set up the proxy for the MDS as follows: -
1. On the BES, start BlackBerry Manager.
2. In left pane, select BlackBerry Domain->Servers-><server_name>_MDS-CS_1.
3. In right pane, click Edit Properties.
4. The BlackBerry MDS Connection Service window appears.
5. In left pane, select Properties->Proxy.
6. In right pane, double click Proxy Mapping.
7. The Proxy Mappings window appears.
8. In the list box, select "http ://.*".
9. Click Properties button.
10. The BlackBerry MDS Connection Service Proxy Configuration window appears.
11. In right pane, do the following: -
12. In Universal Resource Locator text box, keep the content, i.e. "http ://.*".
13. In Proxy String text box, type "PROXY <IP_of_proxy>:8080".
14. In User Name text box, leave the box blank.
15. In Password text box, keep the default content, i.e. "*******".
16. In Password (Confirmation) text box, leave the default content, i.e. "*******".
17. Click Apply.
18. Click OK.
19. Restart the MDS service.

Using the above configuration, I would expect if the user type a URL in the handheld browser, BES would forward the request to the Squid proxy which then get and return the page to the handheld. However this is not happening.

I checked the log file for the MDS service and it seems to be able to contact the Squid proxy.

Have I missed something? Any comment is welcome and appreciated.

Regards,

CapNig.

In addition to fadmin's question:

12. In Universal Resource Locator text box, keep the content, i.e. "http ://.*".
I don't think this is correct, you should use

.*://.*(:\d*)?(/.*)*(\?.*)?

Hi all,

Thanks for replying.

Yes, the BES is able to browse the Internet with Internet Explorer.

Regarding the URL string, I first tried:
h t t p : // .* (remove spaces)
which is the default but no luck. Then I tried the string that freakinvibe suggested, i.e.
.*://.*(:\d*)?(/.*)*(\?.*)?
but it does not make any difference.

I must have missed something but do not know what. Anyone has any bright ideas?

PS: Sorry buy I have to add spaces in the above URL because if I don't, I receive a message saying "You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more" when I submit the post.

Regards,

CapNig.

You should check the MDS log for errors to find the root cause for this.

Did you enable pull authorization rules?

Hi all,

Thank you for your response and sorry for replying late as I need to work on other things.

Regarding fadmin's comment, the answer is no, I did not enable pull authorization rules. According to RIM, enabling pull authorization without configuring and assigning pull rules will prevent all users from browsing to any Web site. So if I do NOT enable pull authorization, does it mean that users CAN browse to ANY Web site?

Regarding freakinvibe's comment, is the MDS log located at:
"C:\Program Files\Research In MOtion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDS\Servers\<server_name>\logs" folder? I checked this folder but found that it is empty.

Yes, that is correct. You don't need to enable pull authorization.

Please check the following folder

"C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs"

and look for log files with MDAT in it.
