Question BB Storm2 GSM or CDMA? 2G or 3G?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a BB Storm2 9550 unlocked here:

I live in Argentina and we have GSM serve here (no CDMA).
I am not clear on the way of working of this device... if it is GSM or CDMA or both!
If I buy it and it is CDMA will be unusefull here... :S

Also, I am not clear on if it is or not 3G.
I read in many placesthat it is only 2G and doesn't work with 3G.
What is the impact on this?

Last one.
I read about a new version of this device with OS6.
Is it worh it to wait for it? When is the release day of it?

Thanks for your help.
Regards,

Guillermo

There is the 9520 Storm 2 GSM and the 9550 Storm 2 CDMA
You would need the 9520.

And yes, its 3G on the 2100 MHz band. So if the carrier you wish to use it with, doesn't have the 2100MHz UTMS (3G) band, then it won't be 3G.

Again, no, there will not be a new storm 2 released. The storm 2, is the storm 2. OS 6, is an OS that may or may not be loadable to the Storm 2.

You want everything in one device?

It's CDMA and GSM. If it's unlocked, you should have no problem with your telco. The Storm2 is a 3G-capable device as well. Also be aware that the BBlackBerry features will only work (internet, BBM, and BIS) with a BIS data plan which in most cases is additional to your phone charges.

The Storm 2 9550 is a Dual Band phone, that means it has a CDMA and GSM chip at the same time...
The problem is that the 3G capability for GSM remains only on 2100 frequency band

I am from Venezuela and I recently unlocked my verizon phone to use it over here... and while it works great, it will not give me 3G over Movistar Venezuela (which is my provider) since they use 1900 frequency band

I am guessing that for Argentina would be the same case since Brazil is the only one using 2100 here at South America...

For my needs its fine, and the phone is great... and is good to know that if I go to Europe or Asia I could take full advantage of 3G being a World phone

As MidnightDraven suggested the Storm 2 9520 would offer full 3G for GSM carriers and it would suit you better, but in my case I was using it with Verizon first, thats why I took this direction

Hi guys,

Well, thanks for all the answers. This Forum is great!!!

I think I am clear now on regard to the GSM and CDMA.

Now, what about the 2G?
What is the impact on ont having 3G but using 2G instead?

Thanks Midnight Draven for your opinion on the new model but, any other heard or read about a new version of this mobile with OS6?

Thanks in advance for your kind answers,

Rgards,
Guillermo

Well, having 2G is noticeable slower on data transfers such as browsing the web (I recommend using Opera which is faster) and downloading files or attachments also take a hit...

Though I can live with 2G for now, and having Wi-Fi is also a plus since while I'm at home I can be at wifi and do all that faster than 3G speeds

I haven't seen or heard about any Storm 2 with OS 6 on video or reviews so far... maybe someone can provide a link... but I only hope that the new OS is so big so we can keep the same amount of Apps and internal memory space...

If you are really interested in OS 6 and touch screen BB maybe you should wait for 9800 which is going to be GSM for sure..
