Default Different OS in DM and BB, is this OK?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everybody,

I have installed a newer version to my DM and now it is OS 4.7.0.37. The same version I wanted to install to my BB 8310, but after finishing my upgrade, my BB has OS 4.5.0.110.
Is it normal that when you upgrade form DM your BB does not get the same OS with the one of DM, and how can I have the same OS in both DM and BB (according to this thread blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/112029-losing-call-logs-sms-emails-optimize-your-bb-how-setup-max-free-memory.html this can be the reason why I cannot find the shared folder at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\)?

Thank you

Desktop Manager has versions.
4.6, 4.7 and now 5.0
These in NO way have a bearing on what will be loaded to your phone.

The OS that your phone uses is specific to your phone.
THe highest OS an 8310 can use is 4.5

Desktop manager and the OS are independant of each other.

Thank you Midnightdraven but how can I get to my DM the same OS that I have on my BB (4.5.0.110) in order to have that "Shared" folder?
Thanks

This doesn't have any bearing on the presence of a sahred folder on your PC. What OS are you running on your PC?

you download the Os that is on your phone from the stickied thread in the device forum of your device.
you then install it.

this creates the shared folder you are on about.

Thank you guys.

ndub33: my OS on my PC is 4.7.0.37

Midnightdraven: the only stickied thread I can find on 8300 forum is: Latest OS: 8310 4.5.0.257/4.5.0.163, but there it shows how to install OS of your DM to your BB and not other way around

I think you are confused.

What are you trying to actually achieve?
you're device can only support OS 4.5

You can use WHATEVER version of Desktop Manager you like. 4.7 or 5.0, even 4.6.

I am trying to gain some free internal memory, as it is described to this thread: Losing Call Logs, SMS or Emails? Optimize your BB! How To Setup for max free memory!.

I can follow all the steps as it is described there untill I have to find the “Shared” folder which I don’t have. And according to John Clark this happens only if you do not have the same version of OS in your DM and BB

Right I now understand what you are doing, and as said before you need to do this:
Find out the OS version on your phone.
Download that OS version from here in the forum for your device.
(tell me the OS and i'll link to the thread with the download)
Install the .exe file that you download.

This creates the shared folder you mentioned, with the OS folder in, with the JAVA folder inside that.

Thank you Midnightdraven, I found the shared folder and did clean up all the files I didn't need as it was described on the thread I mentioned.
But may I ask you how does DM "knows" what OS I want to install on my BB? E.g. first I installed OS 4.7.0.37 on my DM, and then when I connected my BB to my PC it upgraded my BB from OS 4.2 to OS 4.5.0.110. Why 4.5.0.110 and not e.g 4.5.0.257, or 4.5.0.163?

OS 4.7 on my DM?
You mean you installed version 4.7 of desktop manager?

It recognises the vendor code in the BB for your carrier, goes back to the servers, finds the OS's it has for your carrier and presents them to you.
Only OS's from your carrier will be displayed as it connects over the internet.
