Default (Betatesting) Puzzle game - Daughter in the box

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everyone,

I decided to make a game in one day
I implemented the popular chinese puzzle, Daughter In The Box.
It's a very addictive and challenging puzzle game (I love it on my PocketPC), and I couldn't find it anywhere for my BlackBerry.

Here is a screenshot:

And here are the download links:
.jad installer

Also, for those that need them:
.cod and .jar

Enjoy it, and let me know your thoughts and feedback.

Thanks for thee feedback.
It's not yet 100% done, but pretty much everything is there in terms of functionality.

I only tested it on my BlackBerry 7130g.
I still have to run some tests and make some changes for widescreen devices (it will work on them, but it won't look as pretty as it's needed).

I would appreciate if you could tell me if it worked, and on what device.

Jeez...this is indeed much harder than similar puzzles I've tried. I need a life-line!!

One suggestion, selecting the actual piece is a bit annoying with a trackball. As you wrote it for your 7130, it would be nice if you could make use of the left/right as well. Otherwise great game!

Ok, and I don't know what just happened... but half way through the first puzzle, I got a pop up saying "Congratulations, you just solved the puzzle in 100 moves!" It then quit and took me back to the main screen. I'm quite sure I didn't solve the puzzle...

Ok, I don't get how to move. I can move to the block below where I start and then I can't do anything else. Is my stuff messed up or am I missing something?

@talon: Does the piece selection work with the trackball (up-down)? I only tested it with the trackwheel on my 7130. I added some code for the trackwheel but didn't have what to test it on.

How does it display on your screen? The 7130 has 240x260 ... not sure how the game will look on larger resolutions.

The 100 moves is a limitation I have left in the code while testing some stuff. Kindof like a force finish game. I was up 24 hours when I completed the game (I made the game in exactly one day).

@codered: You should be able to change the selection with the trackwheel/ball or the T and G keys, and the move direction (arrow) with the space char. The game allows you to select only the pieces that can be moved (for simplicity and ease) and the directions in which the piece can be moved.

When you start the game, only one piece can be moved into one direction. The rest can't be moved so the game doesn't allow you to select them. Move that piece and see that after that you will have more options

Alright, then maybe it's not working on my phone. I start on the piece second from the left under the main one. If I press any button, it drops to the piece below it, then it doesn't matter what I press, nothing moves.

The version downloaded initially only allows 100 moves...you evidently have to visit his web site to get the "full" version. Just went to it from the link in his sig and don't see any option to get a different version of the game. He talks about it here on his blog page, but looks like the same download links:

@codered78: What BB do you have? 8330? After you move the first piece, nothing happens when use the trackball, or press the T ang G keys on the keypad?

@Redflea: The game is finished, but I haven't finished all testings to make sure it's suitable for a general release. That will be done shortly. I just have a bad habit to release highly polished products. So I put it in a 'demo' mode to see how it works out.

@codered78: After you move down to select the first piece, you can't move anywhere else, as it's the only valid piece. Press the "enter" key to actually move.

@mrobert: on that note, pressing the trackball in, should probably activate the move as well. It took a while, before I figured out it was the enter key. I had actually finished typing the same message as codered78, before I decided to try again.

I can use the up/down on the trackball just like a trackwheel. It would just be nicer, if the left/right worked as well.

So, at this point, there's only a 100 move limit version available?

@talon: You can now redownload the game from the same link. I have added support for horizontall trackball movement.

At this point only the "100 move limit version" is available. A full one will be available shortly.

Thanks...that clears things up.

So - this puzzle is solvable, right?

Yes it is. I solved it in 1300+ moves. It was after a 24 hours day in which I made the game. My girlfriend solved it in 333 moves.

I remember that I solved the PocketPC version which is exactly the same, in under 300 moves.

Anyway, if there is enough interest, I will make and online ranking page where people can submit their score, and hold a small contest ... say a $50 voucher for products from my company or some nice little perk
