Default Bold w/o data still work?

Please Login to Remove!

I have heard that it is possible to use the Bold without a data plan after deleting the APN settings and disabling data, but was wanting to know if that is now out dated information. Also, I would be upgrading from a non smart phone with no data plan. The phone was given to me so I would not be doing this transfer through the store. I have contacted AT&T several times with this question and have gotten different answers. Has anyone here successfully done this method? Any help is appreciated.

Not on ATT. They wil add a data plan for you. They scan the network for devices that need data plans and do not have one and add it automatically.

In any case, you need service books to really use the device. See the FAQ for More info on data plans.

The APN trick might work on a regular cellphone but BlackBerrys are different animals altogether. They get their data through the carrier from RIM. Most cellphones get their data directly from the carrier. Big difference in execution.

About a year ago I was able to go into AT&T online, Manage Account and simply disable the data plan.
Several options did not work anymore: email, appworld, Messenger, but I did not need them.
Web Browsing worked with Wi-Fi. Text, Voice calls and voice mail worked fine.

Recently I had to replace the SIM card, and, instantly a Data Plan was added to my account; the option "I do not need this feature" is not available anymore, but I switched to the $15, 200MB. AT&T forces You to have a data plan if you connect a BlackBerry to their network.

If you don't like it, then you have options.

Use a different device or use a different carrier.

But if you CHOOSE to use a BlackBerry on AT&T, then you have to play by their rules.

But YOU are making the CHOICE.
