I guess the people who bought 1,000,000 of these in the first month would disagree. In any event - it is a phenomenal entertainment and content device. Hasn't replaced anything but my Kindle, but I love the iPad.

I have to agree with you and I am not an apple fan but the iPad is def one of those items that just set a new level in the communication and entrainment field . I have been on my iPad more then I am on my laptop or desktop . Being that I do most of my work online it becomes a perfect device .

I have one now from work to 'evaluate'. I plan to keep it for a long time since I love it!! If I were to get one for myself I'd get one without WiFi since the places I'd use it have wireless (or I can borrow a Sprint MiFi from work if needed).

Love it!

If you ever get a iPhone you can jailbreak it and add an app called mywi which will let you tether your data plan from your iPhone to the iPad via wifi . That's what I am doing it is working perfect . I have a few friends that were online and ready to buy the 3G iPad and then I show them mine and how I am doing. The data on my iPad they were blown away that it cani be done so they ended dropping the extra money that they were going to drop for the 3G 16 gig. Into. Non 3G 32gig.

I do have an iPhone from work too. Jailbroke it yesterday and hacked off the corporate security policy (this is actually part Of my job - to eval and break things). Don't recommend it for anyone else!

Thanks for the info. Will keep it in my back pocket.

definition: Apple iPad:
1.) Something that has to be illegally modified to make useful.
2.) Device of useful value but fun to play with, i.e. a toy.
3.) Hardware money pit.

I am finding it great for surfing the web, which is what I bought a net book for last summer. The net book is way too slow, though, and I'm not using it. The ipad isngreat for that - very snappy.

I am finding (obvious?) limitations with it, which could be due to the relative 'newness' of the apps. For instance, in gmail I can't view pics embedded in a long email (when I scroll past what I can initially see when opening the email the remaining email is completely blank).

I also just bought (well, work bought) the iWorks suite - Pages, Numbers, and Keynote - to evaluate and test interoperability with Office apps. The reviews I've read on them are not at all favorable in that respect.

Ok, well now I feel silly. I hadn't thought about setting up my gmail acct using the native Mail app on the device (probably because it's a work device). Just did so and the emails with embedded pics all view fine.

Blonde moment over.

I absolutely agree with your findings the iPad def has some limits but at the end it does excite a lot of the things that I need pretty well. Overall it has replaced my laptop and I have been able to find workaround the limits by using 3rd party software . I m using docs to go which has been working pretty well so it is not to bad .

What I would really like to see is all the people who are writing all the negative posts have they owned one or have they just played with one in a store. I mean I thought the iPad was going to suck in the beginning but it really blew me away when started to really, use it day to day and see what's going on with it . Netbooks are going to get a run for there money . And most laptops .

My main question is if it's compatible with MS Office. Can the apps save as Office apps and also import files from Office?

I did some work on it and I created some docs on my desktop. I creased a word doc using windows 2007 and I tried excel. Which I use all the time. And they all worked on my iPad using the program. I have also created some docs on the iPad and it synced it with the desktop and I was able to open it on the desktop sooner all it did what I need it to do . I also setup up the email to download all the attachments so I don't run into the issue the file is to big to open and all that crap. So over all it did what I need it to do. If you need more details I will try to run them and get back to you with specifics .

I hate how when I try to use my nails it doesn't respond. I enjoy digital drawing, so I guess I'd need to buy a special stylus if I wanted to use it for art. >______>

Default charging the ipad

Guys and Gals. I am the least tech person that you know...but I have to say that dumb luck sure goes a long way in getting solutions. I think that I have figured out how to solve the APPLE charging problem!!

I had purchased an ipad a couple of weeks back and it was such a pain that it would not charge from my regular USB port. I just threw my arms up and was ready to say that that is the way things were.

BUT.....Someone on another forum had recommended a CSQUID cable to charge my blackberry when the PC was in standby. Well I got an APPLE+MICRO cable sent to me because I also had an iPOD. After I got my iPAD i tried using the regular cable to charge from my Dell and it would not do it.....I had to use the wall adapter.

I saw that the APPLE connectors on the CSQUID looked the same as that for the ipad and I tried charging the IPAD with this CSQUID and voila.....it charges from my Dell!!

I also read on another forum that this is now available at amazon - just type in CSQUID.

All of y'all can send flowers and chocolates to my home now and please do not stop the applause coming!!

Default Epson to the Rescue

I noticed that Epson now has a iPrint App that will allow the iPad to print to some of their printers. Have any of you early adapters tried it yet?

I have not tried it and I will wait for the next generation printers,,, Don't think the printers are out yet but I will have to give it a try when they hit the shelf... You email the doc to your printers email address and it will supposedly print it..

Wirelessly posted (Bold 9000)

Seems kind of useless. I could buy a really good netbook or a semi-decent laptop for the price. Not too mention it would do about 5x more then the ipad can do.

90% of the sales will be due to the apple logo and have nothing to do with the product.

Actually I'm as much of a PC as anyone else. I think the Netbooks are terribly underpowered, as is any Windows based machine with minimal memory and a poor CPU. I do not and have never owned an Apple branded computer. I think the iPad is great for certain functions - web browsing (although I do not like Safari), viewing media, eBook reading and mail. The calendar and address book are great. But it is not useful to me as a business tool as it doesn't support Java. The lack of Flash is overblown, I can live without it. When I travel I take a small, fully functional laptop and the iPad... The iPad is great for entertainment.

And, of course, my 9700 is never far away.

Pretty old thread but I am new here and saw it. I have replaced my laptop with an iPad. Agreed that the laptop could DO a lot more than the iPad, but the iPad is always there, instant on, instantly connected, and runs for a whole day on one charge.

My laptop ran for two hours a most, took ages to load up, was too hot to use on my lap and very often was at home when I wanted to use it in a cafe or somewhere else.

The iPad does most of what I need to do for consumption of data. When I need to make something, then I go and sit at the desktop with a real keyboard, big screen and plenty of storage. But probably 90% of my online time is now on my iPad.

Flash - never yet found an occasion when I have missed it.
Camera - can't imagine ever trying to take a photo with a device this large, and video calling/conferencing fills me with stabby thoughts, so never going to miss that.
Connectivity - would be nice to have a USB to plug in a drive, but with DropBox, etc, there's really no need.

Apart from having a 1280x1024 screen instead of 1024x768, I honestly can't say that there's anything I'd want to change about it.
