Talking first blackberry (bold) and some questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All!
Im new to the forum AND Blackberrys. I just got the BOLD, Loving it so far!

I have a few questions, i know they may be the dumbest ever questions. I guess im just dumb LOL.
Any advice will defintely help.

Since Saturday now tuesday ive charged the phone twice, now due for another charge im running on 35% battery and its 2.50pm It was about 90% when i wet to bed last night. I was talking on the phone for about 1.15hrs and the battery life halved. Is that normal? And it is safe to 'top up' the battery now? and wont kill my battery in the long run?

Ive had wifi turned off, since i got it, and turn it on when i use browser.
Ive changed the brightness to 40% (changed it yesterday)
And always make all my applications are turned off. I dont use messenger.

So im not sure IF its normal, or if there is something im doing wrong or if the battery is defected. So my battery usually lasts about 1.5days since i have gotten it, before i have to charge again, when the batt is 0%.

I thought maybe i need to upgrade the OS .. But i dont understand much about it.

My backberry says:

v4.6.0.216 (platform 4.0.0.183)

Is that the firmware number? I THINK, it might be the latest one??
ive previously had nokia and it was very simple to upgrade.. I sound so dumb Sorry!!

Also my gps doesnt work. Ive dont some research about this, and found lots of info on the forum. But just making sure.. The blackberry maps, are not supported in Australia/Vodafone. I know some have had luck on the Optus network.. right?

What are good applications to download, GPS wise, with the talking directions. I have downloaded google maps, but it is a bit hard when driving, to use it.

Sorry for all the dumb questions.
THANKS

If you are new to the BB and unsure about installing an OS, don't do it. I have heard there is an OS upgrade that does seem to help improve battery life. Check out the stickys at the top of the 9000 section for info and instructions on how to install it.

As for the battery, the Bold battery life isn't as good as previous BBs. Part of that is due to WiFi and part is due to 3G. Are you perhaps in a 3G fringe area where the device might be constantly switching in and out of 3G and/or searching for a 3G signal? I always keep mine topped up when I am near a PC or plug. Doesn't hurt it all.

If you are running any applications in the background, that will also drain the battery, particularly if they are data intensive apps.

As for GPS apps, a device with such a small screen isn't that good or that safe to be using as a primary navigation device while driving IMHO. A pure standalone GPS unit is much better, plus it is fully self contained and doesn't depend on a data connection to operate.

Check out the GPS & Maps section. There is a sticky at the top with reviews of all the major amp applications.
