I am now being told by ATT (after the fact) that RIM has an exclusivity contract with ATT on the 9800 and that ATT is unable to unlock any 9800 phone.
ATT has said the same thing about Apple’s iPhones however they unlocked my wife’s first two iPhones (her iPhone4 is on the way).
Do I have to go to a 3rd party to get these things unlocked? I am a dual citizen and ATT has always been good about this – I travel quite a bit and need to know my carrier will support my needs. My wife and I have been customers since the Cingular days.

Thx for any thoughs/input with regards to getting ATT to legitimately unlock either a new 9700 or a 9800.
Did at&t give you a new Torch or a refurbished one?

Unless BlackBerry reinstall the software for you (basically do a hard reset, not the kind you can do yourself) then so far it can't be unlocked.

I went to the Horizon Wireless website and found that all unlock codes seemed to be $5 - a reasonable price in my opinion. However I found the web site very confusing and I could not find a specific place where I would get an unlock code for a 9800 on the Roger's network.
I went to freemyblackberry.com and found the site much clearer and straight forward. I put in my IMEI number and other relevant information and in less than 48 hours got an unlock code for free. If you also had your MED ID number they offered 24 hour service. The IMEI was easy to get so I went with the slower service. You can also get faster service for a fee. (Did not see whole lot of advertising on the site so am not too sure what their business model is for the free unlock or how much longer they will be around.)
I haven't actually but another service provider's sim card in to verify that my 9800 has been unlocked, but the network lock under device/advanced system settings/sim card now shows as disabled.
I would have liked to have supported Horizon Wireless as a long time supporter of this forum, but it has no excuse for its confusing web site.

I have found that not all unlocking codes work for the blackberry 9800. How do you unlock your blackberry when all 10 attempts have been exhasted?

After the ten attempts have been used, you must get RIM to unlock the device.

There are two routes, and only two, to achieve this.

* IF your device is in warranty, contact your service provider technical support. Tell them you have this issue which needs to be escalated to RIM level customer support. I'll warn you that most carrier technical support people will first assume and think you are referring to a device security unlock, and you will need to convince them otherwise and explain clearly what you need. THEY will not be able to help you because the carriers themselves cannot unlock a device which has had the MEP code attempts depleted, and should (and you will need to ask) to have the case escalated to RIM level tech support.
* If your device is out of warranty, contact RIM direct. See the Contact Us information from the website: BlackBerry - BlackBerry | Contact Research In Motion (RIM) The options you want to select to speak to BlackBerry Customer Care are 3 (for inquiries, orders, billing, e-RMA etc) then 5 (e-RMA and Out of Warranty).
