I am now on my 3rd Nextel BB 7520. When trying to edit my address book on the Blackberry, I get a message that says "Address updated externally. Changes will be lost and view will be closed." All changes are lost, so editing the address book becomes impossible. Adding new contacts seems to work fine.

Does anyone have an answer to this problem? Is this happening to others?
Both Nextel and RIM were not very helpful. I'm assuming its a software issue.

No. I use it off my desktop, and sync with Outlook 97.

I am running the newest software. I downloaded it from the Nextel site. Also, I have copied the address book into another file by desktop computer incase it was a corrupted file, and reloaded it to the Blackberry.

I am not 100% sure, but your version of Outlook raised my eyebrow. 97 is pretty old, you may need to upgrade it at least to 2000, if not XP or 2003. I am running 2003 and someone in my office is running XP and there are no problems.

I agree I am running the latest version of Outlook and I change address info on my 7520 and on the computer often and it transfers rather quickly every time.

I just had this problem and it can be fixed by performing the following steps:

1. backup your blackberry
2. go into your desktop manager, click on backup/restore, then advanced options.
3. On the handheld databases, click on address book, then click clear.
4. restore your blackberry using the backup you just created.

Step 3 may be redundant, but the process fixes the problem.

Go into options -> Security and Disable Content Protection. This will solve the issue. The Nextel handhelds don't perticularly like Content Protection for some reason and it will give you this error message.

I have a bes 4.0 with groupwise. I have the same error message. I tried to disable the content protection, but It doesn't seems to work. any idea about it ?

Someone (BFRYE?) mentioned a problem with gw 6.5.? not syncing the add book right every time. This may be part of your problem

5-31-05 I had this very problem. Some of my address would not allow me to edit, where others would. I could create new ones on the handheld w/out problems. I did what the person suggested above and all is now 100%. Thanks for the hint.
