Default GPS on Verizon Curve (8330) - How can 'we' get it working?

Please Login to Remove!

Although 'known' since December 08, I only recently stumbled upon enabling GPS in Verizon Curve and Pearl with software v4.5. I had had this sw version for quite some time but wasn't aware of enabling GPS. So, I subsequently did and got bbmaps to work with GPS as many others have.

So, desiring a turn by turn option (a good one) with voice, etc. I started researching. I want google maps to be exact (not the estimated) and am also trying to get AmAze to work.

I read in a previous post that if one had purchased VzWNav and had it running in background, that other 3rd party GPS apps would work. So, I thought to myself, why can't I have bbmaps running with GPS in background and have other 3rd party apps working? Why? I dont know - hence my post.

I've got it running in background - 9 satellites. Google maps is same, Amaze says "can't locate sattelites" and I've got GPSed open as I type but it just says "GPS initializing..." forever but does nothing.

So, any other ideas / brainstorming? Has anyone else tried this path with success? I know bbmaps will do directions, but, I would love to be able to have turn by turn with voice as in AmAze so I can actually USE it while I'm driving.

Hope this stimulates some thought and discussion. I refuse to pay verizon any more money. I'm happy with them overall but I pay them enough.

Here's my phone:
Verizon Blackberry Curve 8330
Software v.4.5.0.131

(Options --> Advanced Options --> GPS --> GPS Data Source (Device GPS), GPS Data Services (LOCATION ON <--for those that don't know, this is what needs to be changed from 911 only to Location On to get GPS to work on BBMaps)

Blackberry Maps will wok with GPS, BB Maps and Google Maps don't have turn by turn directions. If you want turn by turn other than VZNav your best option is to get a GPS Puck.

This has been discussed a million times. Don't hope for a very long thread.

I do know it has been discussed a lot, but I hadn't seen anyone with the idea of having BBMaps running background.

The PUCK is $70-$80. For that I'd just buy a Garmin nuvi for $100.

Google Maps will not do turn-by-turn directions. Your best bet is to spend the money for a BT puck and keep the device, versus sending money to VZW. I'm using a Keychain GPS 2000 puck and it works like a charm with AmazeGPS.
