There is no dust etc, there is a piece of hardware that gets pulled out to some extent when you pull out the headphone jack.
I used a plastic pen refill, thin enough to go inside and then pushed gently, there was "thud" kind of feeling inside as if something got pushed and fixed in place, after which it started working properly. So next time dont forget to carry a pen when using Blackberry!

Doing the 25 times (no 25, but few) inserts fixed the problem for us, it is definitely hardware.

Thanks for the tip. I can't remember the exact sequence but it was during a call and I kept plugging and unplugging the jack, setting it to handset and headset and also toggled the mute key just before it stayed on handset. Wish I could remember the sequence.

What a royal pain this was - I was using the phone for text only the last couple of weeks. I can't believe Blackberry hasn't issued a fix for this thing, or let people know what causes it.

What causes it has already been posted. Its either a defective or dirty headphone jack. Plain and simple.

It happens to me when I´m listening to music and I unplug the jack without stopping/closing the music app. To correct the problem, I plug in the headphones jack again, play music, press STOP button, close music app, unplug jack, problem solved.
