Default Turn 3G off?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there a way to turn off 3G but keep the phone/line active? I went under 'Manage Connections' and unchecked the Mobile Network (because I thought it would disable the 3G) but it turned 3G and my line off

Well, maybe I should be more specific.

Are you trying to kill 3G/EDGE/GPRS totally? Or make 3G run as EDGE/GPRS?

If you want to kill it totally, turn data services off.

If you want to make 3G run as EDGE/GPRS, then change the "Network Mode" from "3G & 2G" to "2G"

Go into Mobile Network Options

Top option on that screen should allow you to turn Data Services Off.

I know here in the US on AT&T you can't. I now have 3G in my area but it's not a good signal so I get a lot of data issues along with the good old "call failed". Bold worked great when only on the edge network. Since this weak 3G signal came into the area it's really been a pain. Might actually cost me my Bold. Talked with AT&T to get a work around then they sent me to RIM. RIM told me all Bolds except the ones with AT&T can disable the 3G. Lucky me, Thanks AT&T!!!

Hey, Verizon also does it on the Storm.

Yea, its lame I know. Sad part is you can switch between 3G and 2G on an iPhone. Why in hell we had it disabled for the Bold is absurd. Us lowly techs are never given answers to those kinds of important questions

Hm, I have a rogers unlocked bold and I have an option in my wireless network options that lets me pick between these 3 options:

2G
3G
2G and 3G

I keep it on 2G most of the time, and you guys are right, the battery improves 10 fold.

This feature is blocked on Bolds with Vendor ID 102, which are devices sold by at&t. Rogers is Vendor ID 107, hence why you have the option. My Bold has Vendor ID 100 (T-Mobile USA), and I also have the option.

I have the opposite problem (at my house). When I power up or reset my Bold I get a 4bar 3G signal. After a couple minutes a 5 bar EDGE signal takes over and I never get 3G. I'd like to turn off EDGE and only get 3G at home.

That means that the 3G signal is too weak and therefore EDGE takes over. If you disable EDGE, then you probably wouldn't get a signal at all.

IMO all it means is that the Edge signal is STRONGER then the 3G which it is and not that the 3G would be too weak. 4 bars (out of 5) of 3G signal works fine elsewhere when there is no EDGE. I believe the BB is just capturing the STRONGEST signal even if the slightly weaker signal would be fine.

That's not true. I have 3 bars of 3G and 5 bars of EDGE and right now it's using 3G. It will use EDGE only if 3G is too weak to transmit.

Then based on your example 3G should be working not Edge because 4 bars of 3G are more then enough signal to use 3G without any issue Based on a total of "5 bars" that's 80% 3G vs 100% Edge so it should default to 3G. The 3G tower is about 1 to 1.5 miles from my house. The tower that is being used is less then 1/4 mile from my house ATCF and is 150' high - I can see it clearly from my window. I think the BB is seeing such an overwhelming signal from that tower it is simply choosing it.

And it can be done on an AT&T Bold.

This has been discussed MANY times, and requires the simplest of searches to find the answer.

An AT&T Bold must be unbranded in order to manually switch between 2G and 3G. However, per forum policy, the process nor links to the process can be discussed here.
