Default IMAP server is verified, but am not receiving emails.

Please Login to Remove!

Just picked up a 7130c on cingular... with the new BIS 29.99 plan.

I used the online cingular blackberrystart page to login and add email accounts. I have added an OWA (exchange) account and an IMAP (dot mac) account. Both work well.

I then tried adding another IMAP account (textdrive.com) and the BIS page says that the account is verified and able to connect. But no matter what I do cannot receive emails on this account. The IMAP server is live since BIS says that it has verified ad connected to it, and I also am able to check it using my desktop client.

I emailed my hosting company (textdrive.com), and they have said its a standard IMAP server but they the CS rep did mention that another BB customer emailed them saying he has the same problem...

Anybody have any suggestions? Is there anyone I can contact at Blackberry to report this to?

I suggest contacting your mail server rep again. Have him check the mail server logs. We use Linux here and I can monitor BIS connectivity in the pop3d.auth log.

you also mentioned you check your email on a client @ your desktop..is this through sometihng like Outlook? if so make sure your leaving a copy of the message on the server for the BIS to see and send to your handheld

There is no Leave on Server option for IMAP Outlook accounts. However, if using Outlook for IMAP you can see if the BIS really polls your mail server:

1. Open Outlook and login to your IMAP account
2. Don't open any emails that are unmarked
3. Wait for the next BIS poll (up to 15 minutes)

You should get a popup warning that your IMAP connection was disconnected. That would prove the BIS is successfully connecting to your IMAP account.

My main IMAP client is Mail.app on OSX. I dont use outlook, but I think my IMAP server allows multiple connections. I cant find the exact url, but I remember reading that fact on my hosing company message boards...

In any case, I have/do use multiple IMAP clients to connect to my server simultaneously (mail.app, a web based client installed on my webserver...) and neither client gives me a disconnect error.

Thanks for the suggestions... I will keep trying to get my servers IMAP logs from my hosting company. It might take them awhile, but I'll post whatever i get on this forum.

Thanks.

Is it possible that your mail.app is moving messages to other folders or marking them as read before the BIS polls? Only the Inbox is looked at. Also, you may want to ask what IMAP implemntation is being used on the server. Cyrus uses a different IMAP folder layout.

I do not have my mail.app set to filter or move message around. Also it does not set messages as read automatically. I also thought this might be the problem, so I closed the mail.app while doing these test with the BB. Same problem, BIS says it connects and verifies, but no messages go through.

Here are the logs from the IMAP server, can you make anything of it?

By the way, I will get back to you on which implementation of IMAP and the servers version number is later, I just sent them an email asking about it.

Thanks

The log looks good, but I see its IMAP-ssl correct? Do you have SSL set on the BIS account? Notice the headers=0 and body=0 This indicates the IMAP server did not exchange any messages.

Yes its ssl... port 993, and the ssl box is checked on the BIS page. This also matches the settings in my other mail client.

If headers=0, what would explain the amount of bytes transferred during the second attempt?

Also per the hosting company - "We're using Courier-IMAP (ver. 4.1.1)."

didn't realise that about IMAP (not having to worry about leaving a copy on the server) my bad i'm used to using POP only

question topher - how many emails are in the inbox of your server? if you have alot (and/or large attachments) sometimes nothing gets polled

When doing these tests, there is usually no more than 5 unread emails sitting there... All plain text, nothing large, no attachments. I was trying to be mindful of what is on the imap server while doing these test, so for the heck of it I even tried sending fresh emails from different sources to test out if the BB would receive these. No luck either.

BIS sees not just unread email when it polls...it sees all the email in total in your inbox - and grabs what ever is new based on what it saw before and what it sees then

So based on this log... the mailbox looks empty to BIS? Is that right?

it seems more like BIS is timing out before it can verify if there are any new messages - try moving some of your emails to a seperate folder (if you've got more then 800) then see if it works

I only have 454 messages in that mailbox... i also tested around this by using a brand new user/mailbox i created when i first found this problem. But same thing, no messages being delivered to the BB...

The bytes include all conversations; i.e. login, select, fetch, etc. Here's the link for Courier-IMAP http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/

If you have Outlook available, can you try to configure the account using IMAP?

I'll be interested to see if you get this resolved. My boss has the same problem. I've set up myself and another guy on our pop3, and it worked no problem. I've set every setting in his BIS and Groupwise exactly the same as mine, with no luck. Our IT says the pop settings are global, so there should be nothing in his account that would be different.

The setup of folders. Separate Inbox, Junk Email.

Alright... I tried what you suggested.

There is a "Junk E-mail", "Sent Items", "Deleted Messages", and an "INBOX". Notice INBOX is in caps. Could this be the problem, is the BB client case sensitive when it comes to IMAP folders? If so is there a way to change this to "Inbox"?
