Default Exchange 2010 Migration

Please Login to Remove!

Hoping someone here can help me ...

I've just migrated all our users to Exchange 2010 from 2003, and everything seemend fine. BES 5.0.1MR1 installed and sync'ing emails without problem, until I moved the BESAdmin mailbox to the Exchange 2010 server

As soon as I did that, all Blackberries stopped working and my email box filled up with error messages (unable to start user).

I have rebooted BES and Exchange 2010

I have run the IEMSTEST utility and here is the strange thing ... with all services started I get an error that it cannot open the message store for the profiles (BESAdmin). If I stop the Blackberry Controller service and run the IEMSTEST utility all tests pass successfully.

If I move the BESAdmin account back to Exchange 2003, it can open the BESAdmin profile but none of the user mailboxes on 2010.

I had been running with my mailbox on Exchange 2010 and the BESAdmin account on Exchange 2003 for a few weeks without any problems.

I can post any logs needed if anyone can help with this?

Hi Raiden,

Thanks for responding. I meant to update this post, as I have resovled it.

It seems that RIM have left a line out of their documentation (they are aware and are due to update) that is a required step on te Exchange server;

Needed to run this command
Set-ThrottlingPolicy -RCAMaxConcurrency $null -identity BESPolicy
Which allows more than 20 connections to the Exchange server by the BESAdmin account.

I am in a similar position. Currently testing EX2010 (EX2003 to EX2010 migration) and I am the only production account on the box. We have over 200 BB users (including myself). I am not able to send, receive or sync my device. I am aware the mapi settings for the BESadmin account are pointing to the old EX2003 server. I am not ready to pull the trigger on the other users because managment will throw a fit if their BBs are down for even a hour.

If I run Set-ThrottlingPolicy -RCAMaxConcurrency $null -identity BESPolicy on the EX2010 server, what does this affect? If I could get a copy/link to the documentation that would be helpful.

The set-throttlingpolicy allows more than 20 connections to the Exchange 2010 server from a single account. So running that command allows the BESAdmin account to create as many connections as it needs, without that command BESAdmin will only make 20 connections so only 20 Blackberrys willl work.

I have not had any other consequences or problems from running that command.

If blackberry downtime is an issue for you, you can do what I did ...

Grab a test license from RIM for BES and install BES on a spare server and activate yourself on the new server. I still used the same account BESAdmin for my test BES, so I knew all permissions would be correct when I went live.

The only documentation I know of for this is the BES / Exchange 2010 documentation from RIM - cannot post links, but google RIM Exchange 2010 - but if that hasn't been updated it yet it won't contain the information you need.

If you are unable to activate yourself on your existing BES, have your done the following;
- Installed MR1 for BES 5.0.1
- Installed Exchange rollup 1
- Set the required permissions on the Exchange 2010 (see above documents from RIM)

If I can help more I will

I tried the throttling policy with no success but thanks to one of the links by knottyrope I found the following commands which worked perfectly.

Type: Get-MailboxDatabase | Add-ADPermission -User "BESAdmin" -AccessRights ExtendedRight -ExtendedRights
Receive-As, ms-Exch-Store-Admin.

Type: Add-RoleGroupMember "View-Only Organization Management" -Member "BESAdmin".

How in the heck is Microsoft expect any of us to remember all the various commands with EMS or Powershell? I guess that is why the internet and manuals come in handy!

Thanks for the help.

I know what you mean - it's gonna be a hell of a learning curve

Glad your problem is fixed.
