We are a small business and I am rolling out BES4 and blackberry to the team. We have just invested in a server with Microsoft SBS 2003. I thought I could just stick BES on the same box - no problems. I don't really want to buy another server

Can I stick the BES on a box within the network to act as a server?

Any help to a not so techie MD who justs wants to sync his outlook wirelessly

It's not really the recommended approach simply because of the system resources required to run the BES services....including the MSDE db on the same box. Plus RIM would be very reluctant to support this configuration.
However...if it's a small amount of users it could work, but expect a performance degradation with respect mail processing, attachment processing/viewing...etc.
If I were you...I would get a high end desktop (used P4 512MB RAM 40GB HD 10/100 Mbps NIC). This would be cheaper than buying a server. I've installed and ran BES v4.0 on my laptop and it functions quite well.

Good suggestion on the desktop for the BES. To prove the conecpt at my company, we ran BES 3.6 on an E-machines (celeron processor, 1G of RAM). I thought it wouldn't work, but was actually able to handle about 40 users (on v3.6). I wouldn't recommend it for several users, particularly running 4.0, but if just a few, you should be ok.
