Well, I finally took the plunge yesterday. I just couldn't resist any longer. I loaded .42 onto my 8100. I have a some questions now.

1. I thought I remembered but sure can't find it with searching. With my old version 4.2.1.107, I had 29-31 mbs free after a battery pull. Now I have 19-20. Is this right?

2. I am running 1.0.70 of Audible Air. I can't seem up update my subscriptions. Any suggestions?

3. In Media, I can no longer go to the next/back by 6/4. Normal too?

I love Docs to Go, the ability to make folders on the home screen, and the bowser!

Wanda (really hoping this doesn't kill the SIM )

Based on one person's experience, the answer is no, they have not fixed the SIM killing problem.

Working great here too. Make sure you install Docs to Go or JiveTalk may not work. No idea why, but it's a fact.

It does seem to be less prevalent with .42 but not completely fixed.

wawasteele,

1. That sounds right if those are your numbers, you would know best. The new OS does take more device memory than the 4.2.
3. I didn't know that shortcut was disabled, another 8100 user will need to confirm.

The SIM-fying has occurred mostly on 8320 models.

I had docs to go on my .37, got jivetalk working and then deleted it. Didn't have to install it for jivetalk to work on .42

Have this stinkin' OS sitting on my desktop and I'm too scared to install it because of all this fried sim talk. Maybe if I get drunk...

Default wow!

I am running 4.5.0.42 and still experiencing the memory leak. When I try to start voice dialing it freezes for about a minute then tells me that there is insufficient memory. I have even done the battery pull and when the system restarts and I check the memory there is still basically the same amount i had before the restart!

Default loaded 4.5.0.42 today

HI I have a tmo 8320 and loaded so far everything seems to be working well enjoying new features able to stream you tube with wifi. UMA works well just noticed a little lag when switching back to edge when walking away from starbucks hot spot. The screen is a little soft pictures of people i have set up on their profiles are not as clear as before. When it locked up one time I had to hard reboot and it didn't remeber my icon arrangement. However as soon as i rebooted everything became more responsive looks like it needed to clear something when rebooting. so far so good just worried about sim cards frying.

so it works with the 8310? I have lost all my messages 2x with this phone, I'd call that a significant memory leak!

Overall, 4.5.0.42 has been running very smoothly on my 8300, and some of the little changes I've seen are nice. It does seem to use more memory that 4.2.x.x, and that may be due to add-ons like Docs to Go. I'm making the jump from 4.2.x.x all the way to this, so I'm still enjoying the newness of the media player with play lists, improved layout of mail and calendar, etc.

Upgrading to the 4.5 and up version of Empower got that working, and so far everything else seems to be working well, including JiveTalk, Google Maps 2.2 with very slick LBS features, the recently republished BBWeather and YWeather, Viigo, LiveSearch 2.0.3048, Opera Mini.

Only problem I've seen so far is what appears to be a memory leak. Right after reboot, I have about 10Mb free, and I just check again, about 10 hours after the last boot, and I am down to about 5.5Mb free.

This MIGHT be a problem - or it could simply be the way the memory manager is tuned -- Windows Mobile people are used to having it use up most of the memory most of the time, only recycling it when needed (garbage collect is a "lazy process"). I have to keep an eye on this - don't want to run into the old "disappearing lists" issue, or have the device jam up on me for lack of free mem.

Overall - I like it...

.42 does have some noticeable memory issues as well as battery life issues. Also if you send a voicenote over BBMessenger, it can't be played by the recipient. The recipient has to save it first, then play it. Beyond that, it's good.

The battery life is crappy. I didn't even make it an 8hr work day before the battery was too low for phone functions. I have found that .42 is worse than .37

I pray for a resolve to this problem. I used the video camera of my 8310 on the weekend to video the kids! So I'd love to keep it, but may have to go back until the real release :(

Glad they fixed the BB Browser curser/pointer issue. Hadn't discovered that one on .37 until just a couple days ago. Sucks to hear the red! is back. That was my biggest annoyance with .18.

Quick question though. I'm very anal about my ringer settings. I have each stock setting layed out a certain way with a mix of Cingular tunes and custom sounds. Every time I update OS it wipes those settings, but everything else seems to hold, even BBM conversations and such. Anyone have a way to have your Profiles settings stick? It takes forver and to go through and re-setup all my ringtones and alerts.

Yeah, the battery did suck. And it had a little memory leak issue. But to trade off functionality, for dependability, wont work yet.. Rolling back....

I actually *had* done some cleanup before, but rereading the thread starter prompted me to review and get a bit more aggressive, with the end result being that I now have around 13MB free on boot -- got about another 3MB back doing this.

Won't make the memory leak go away...but for now, it should hopefully last longer between needed reboots.
